Special Topic
Stadium owners and architects today face a common challenge: how to modernize venues while improving spectator comfort, maximizing premium hospitality revenue, and minimizing operational disruption.
Whether renovating historic stadiums or developing new multi-purpose venues, seating design plays an increasingly important role in shaping both the spectator experience and long-term venue operations.
The following five projects demonstrate how leading stadiums around the world have addressed these challenges through innovative seating solutions.

01Riyadh Air Metropolitano – Atletico Madrid (Spain)

Overview & Capacity:
Madrid, Spain | 67,703 seats (7,000 VIP seats, 79 premium suites).

Seating Challenge:
Upgrading seating to prioritize fan comfort and spaciousness close to the pitch, matching a modern concrete finish.

Technical Solution:
Installed the ergonomic ARC range with increased seat depth, a higher backrest, and a standard 500 mm center-to-center spacing to maximize personal space.

Operational Value:
Wider, ergonomic dimensions elevated the matchday experience, creating visual consistency across general and premium tiers.

02Bank of America Stadium (USA)

Overview & Capacity:
Charlotte, USA | 75,525 seats (14 luxury lower-level bunker suites) | Open-air NFL stadium.

Seating Challenge:
Retrofitting open-air bunker suites with premium reclining seats capable of enduring heavy rain, stains, and constant UV exposure.

Technical Solution:
Outfitted with the Milano Glide reclining chair. Customized with marine-grade vinyl fabric, UV-resistant threads, hot-dipped galvanized steel structures, and draining cupholders.

Operational Value:
The space-saving glide design optimized seat counts without compromising foot room, while weatherproof treatments reduce maintenance requirements.

03 Emirates Stadium – Arsenal FC (UK)

Overview & Capacity:
London, UK | 60,260 seats (General Admission, Corporate Boxes, and the Avenell Club).

Seating Challenge:
Delivering elite, customizable hospitality solutions for premium corporate sectors and the media center within a three-tiered bowl layout.

Technical Solution:
Installed the Riviera VIP Stadium Chair featuring personalized embroidery, cupholders, and built-in seat heaters. Upgraded the Media Centre with 150 Atlantic seats.

Operational Value:
Premium tiered seating successfully supports long-term corporate hospitality revenue and sets a benchmark for luxury executive boxes.

04Maracanã Stadium (Brazil)

Overview & Capacity:
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | 78,838 seats | Legacy stadium with a new roof covering 95% of seating.

Seating Challenge:
Modernizing a historic arena while improving durability, circulation, and operational efficiency.

Technical Solution:
Mass-installed the robust FCB-M spectator seating system, featuring a compact tip-up envelope profile for optimized safety.

Operational Value:
Highly durable tip-up chairs simplified stadium cleaning operations, maximized egress efficiency, and provided clear sightlines from all tiers.

05Nissan Stadium (Japan)

Nissan Stadium

Overview & Capacity:
Yokohama, Japan | 72,327 seats | First-stand seating renovation.

Seating Challenge:
Replacing tens of thousands of fixed seats within a tight construction window without interrupting the stadium's active event schedule.

Technical Solution:
Implemented a 2-piece spring-up stadium seat, fast-tracking construction by reusing existing metal legs and connecting pipes without drilling new anchor bolts.

Operational Value:
Shortened the construction period to less than one-third of that required by conventional replacement methods. The spring-up mechanism widened the aisle passage by 10 centimeters for safer transit and cleaning.

These projects demonstrate the increasingly important role seating plays in the performance and long-term value of modern sports venues.
Whether through premium hospitality environments, weather-resistant materials, or efficient renovation strategies, each project represents a different approach to meeting the evolving demands of stadium operators and spectators.
Drawing on experience from projects around the world, the Kotobuki Seating Group continues to develop seating solutions tailored to the specific needs of each venue.
