Project Description

A vibrant cultural hub in the heart of Osaka

In March 2024, Sky Theater MBS opened on the 6th floor of JP Tower Osaka, directly connected to Osaka Station in a prime downtown location. This highly anticipated venue succeeds the much-loved Theater BRAVA!, which closed in 2016 to the deep regret of audiences and theater professionals alike. With a seating capacity of 1,289, the theater was carefully designed to cultivate a strong sense of unity between performers and audience members. Since opening, it has presented a wide range of productions, including plays, musicals, concerts, variety shows, and traditional performing arts.
The lobby is one of the theater’s defining features. Designed around a striking green-and-white theme and framed by floor-to-ceiling glass, it draws visitors into an extraordinary theatrical setting while projecting the venue’s vitality and excitement outward to the surrounding city.

Audience seating designed for excellent visibility and unity

The seating layout ensures clear sightlines to the stage from every seat, enabling performers to connect directly with the entire audience. To prevent visual obstruction, the center blocks on both the first and second floors adopt a staggered configuration, with each row offset by half a seat.
A particularly distinctive aspect of Sky Theater MBS is the remarkable proximity between the stage and the seating. Of the 871 seats on the first floor, 352 seats located in front of the cross-aisle are bordered by side runways set at the same height as the stage. Depending on the production, performers may pass within arm’s reach of the audience. In addition, the first four rows are mounted on casters; when an orchestra pit is required, these seats can be unlocked and repositioned with ease, providing exceptional flexibility.
The 418 seats on the second floor are also impressively close to the stage, with the front row situated just 20 meters away. A generous tier rise of 432–465 mm ensures that even patrons in the upper level enjoy immersive, unobstructed views.

Specialized seats for a comfortable viewing experience

The theater is equipped with customized Unison TS-19 series seating. An angled wedge beneath each armrest allows guests to draw their knees inward, effectively increasing legroom and facilitating smooth passage along the row. The ergonomically designed 3D-curved backrest provides gentle support during extended performances while maintaining a compact form.
The seats incorporate the Spacia design, characterized by a tapered front edge that reduces pressure on the back of the knees and allows users to slide their feet further under the chair when standing up or sitting down. Internally, serpentine springs distribute body weight evenly, delivering firm and durable support. On the second floor, where the rake is steeper, aisle-facing seat backs are fitted with robust steel handles. These loop-shaped grips are finished to harmonize with the interior and provide a secure, comfortable hold for safe movement.
For ease of maintenance, the theater selected FP series upholstery, which allows most stains to be removed using water alone. The design features three shades of green—the theater’s signature colors—arranged in a random pattern. The moquette-style fabric offers a subtle sheen and refined texture, enhancing the festive and immersive atmosphere of the venue.
