Toyonaka Rose Cultural Hall
Toyonaka Rose Cultural Hall

Multi-Purpose Hall

Project Description
A renewed hub for civic arts: Inheriting multipurpose utility through a retractable seating system
Opened in July 1989 in Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture, the defining characteristic of Toyonaka Rose Cultural Hall is its dual functionality. The hall can operate as a full-scale theater—complete with tiered seating, a stage, curtains, and professional lighting—while also allowing all these elements to be stored away to create a large, flat open space. For decades, an electric retractable seating system has played a central role in enabling smooth transitions between stage-based events such as concerts and musicals and open-floor uses including parties and exhibitions.
Following a major one-year renovation to address aging infrastructure, a new state-of-the-art
retractable seating system
was introduced in the renewed hall. The most decisive factor in its selection was its proven safety and reliability. The previous system, originally installed in 1989, had been in operation for more than 30 years without a single accident or malfunction, thanks to regular inspections and professional maintenance.
Second-generation retractable seating: Upgraded with modern features
The new retractable seating system represents a significant evolution in both operability and comfort. While the former system was controlled by a simple three-button remote, the updated version features a remote switch equipped with an LCD. This screen provides real-time operational status and clear error notifications, such as obstacle detection. In addition, a voice navigation guide has been incorporated, allowing staff to operate the system safely and intuitively.
Seating comfort has also been improved through dimensions better suited to contemporary users. Compared with the previous model, the seat width has increased by 40 mm and the seat height by 10 mm. Both the backrests and seats are filled with molded polyurethane and upholstered in high-quality fabric typically used in full-scale theaters. The color scheme—three vivid shades of red—marks a shift from the hall’s former cool-toned interior and aligns naturally with the identity of the “Rose” Cultural Hall. By distributing these colors randomly throughout the seating, the design creates a glamorous visual effect, reminiscent of rose petals in bloom across the hall.
Expanding the scope of events with flexible layouts
A new “middle-tier setting” was introduced to support a wider range of event formats. While the full system consists of 14 tiers with a total of 286 seats, this function allows the hall to deploy only the first six tiers, providing 132 seats. By reducing the number of deployed seats, the front row is set further back, enabling a significantly larger stage area when the lifting stage is configured in its flat position.
The Brace FC-3232 stacking chair
was also adopted as part of the renewal. Featuring a theater-style tip-up seat and a high backrest, it offers stability and comfort comparable to fixed seating. Using the same upholstery as the retractable seating system, these seats maintain a consistent visual identity throughout the hall. They also serve as caregiver seats when wheelchair-accessible spaces are secured in front of the main seating area.
Facility overview
Toyonaka Rose Cultural Hall opened in 1989 with the aim of promoting creative activities and fostering community-based cultural development in Toyonaka City. In February 2024, the hall underwent a major renovation that included seismic reinforcement and the modernization of aging facilities, such as a complete transition to LED lighting. The renewed hall attracted strong local interest, with many residents attending the grand reopening event in March 2025 to celebrate the rebirth of this important cultural venue.
