Project Description

One of the Tokai region’s largest live entertainment venues

Opened in March 2025, COMTEC PORTBASE introduces a new type of live entertainment venue to the Tokai region as a large-scale concert hall. Its name reflects the concept of “setting sail from a new departure base into a vast ocean of possibilities called live entertainment.” Inspired by this theme, the building features a bold exterior design reminiscent of a ship. The two-story facility has a total floor area of approximately 3,800 square meters and accommodates up to 2,244 people for standing events or 1,070 guests in a fully seated configuration, making it one of the largest venues of its kind in the region.
Although live music venues are a relatively uncommon project type within Kotobuki Seating’s portfolio of theaters and halls, this facility successfully combines flexible stacking chairs for standing concerts with fixed seating using the BLM-1300 series, a one-piece bench seat system widely used in major sports venues.

A long-awaited venue for entertainment in the Tokai region

One of the primary motivations behind the development of COMTEC PORTBASE was the longstanding shortage of medium- to large-scale entertainment venues in the Tokai area. Following the closure of several nearby facilities after 2008, opportunities to host live concerts and stage productions became increasingly limited. COMTEC PORTBASE was created to address this demand and revitalize the local entertainment scene as a new cultural destination.

Flexible seating layouts for both standing and seated performances

A defining feature of the venue is its seating plan, carefully designed to ensure clear views of the stage from every position. By incorporating a significant elevation difference between the first and second floors, the hall achieves excellent sightlines and a comfortable viewing experience even from the rear sections.
The second floor is equipped with 420 BLM-1308 seats. This one-piece stadium seat integrates the backrest and seat into a single shell structure with a generously deep seating surface. Widely used in baseball stadiums, soccer venues, racetracks, and player dugouts throughout Japan, the model has earned a strong reputation for comfort despite its simple structure. Its ergonomic contours naturally support the spine and lower back, allowing guests to remain comfortable during long performances.
The first floor primarily functions as a standing area, but it can quickly be transformed into a seated audience space using FC-303 stacking chairs. Lightweight and easy to handle, these chairs are particularly well suited for live entertainment venues where rapid setup and reconfiguration are essential. Their ganging function allows rows to be linked together smoothly and securely, creating an orderly seating layout. Barrier-free spaces are also provided at both the front and rear of the first floor to accommodate wheelchair users comfortably.
This flexible dual-purpose design enables the venue to adapt seamlessly between seated and standing event formats, expanding capacity from 1,070 seated guests to 2,244 standing attendees depending on the nature of the performance.

Custom cushioning for enhanced comfort and operational efficiency

To improve comfort on the first floor, the FC-303D stacking chairs are fitted with custom seat cushions that are 5 mm thicker than the standard specification and use higher-density polyurethane for enhanced support. Compared with conventional folding pipe chairs, the larger seat and back surfaces distribute weight more evenly across the thighs and back, reducing fatigue and helping guests remain comfortable during extended performances.
During the selection process, representatives from both the client and the general contractor visited the Kotobuki Seating showroom to conduct comparative seating evaluations with competing manufacturers. The superior seating comfort of Kotobuki’s chairs ultimately led to their adoption for the project.
Operational efficiency was also an important consideration. Dedicated storage carts located beneath the stage can each accommodate more than 110 stacking chairs, enabling staff to quickly deploy, rearrange, or store seating according to the scale and format of each event.
