Project Description

Transforming 'Suita City Cultural Hall' into a more comfortable space

Since 2019, May Theater (Suita City Cultural Hall) has undergone large-scale renovation work for improving earthquake-resistance. It reopened in September 2020 with enhanced comfort and convenience, easy access to all, and incorporating barrier-free features.
The facility includes three halls capable of hosting a wide range of performances according to their scale, as well as a reception hall and exhibition rooms, making it a user-friendly venue for the residents.
The Middle Hall is a versatile space that can accommodate various layouts, including an arena-style seating arrangement where the stage is surrounded by the audience. It is ideal for theatrical performances, musicals, and classical performing arts. In its standard configuration, the hall seats 492, but in the arena-style setup, it can accommodate up to 622 seats, expanding the possibilities for staging and performances.

Custom-made seats designed to suit a playhouse

The replaced seats are custom-made keeping the image of a playhouse in mind. The seat is secured in a lowered position so that it does not rise up. The backrest is relatively low in height - the high back type and the low back type have a height of 900mm and 800mm respectively.
We held several meetings when deciding on the specifications of the seating; we brought in samples of upholstery, wood, and hardware to match the architectural specifications such as the new floor finish of the hall.
The three-dimensional, plain-woven upholstery is an original design by Fabriko Co., Ltd., a textile design company. The blue-gray color of the upholstery is inspired by the 'Kuwai (Threeleaf arrowhead)' plant - a local specialty that is also the city's symbol. The modern color was chosen to complement the various performances held at the hall. The black-based fabric is interwoven with shades of bluish-green, blue, and purple to create a deep and sophisticated color scheme. Particularly, the glossy threads inspired by the color of young Kuwai sprouts shine as accents.
The warm and natural look before the renovation has now given way to a sleek and modern look.

Barrier-free access to suit a wide range of clientele

This renovation project has placed great emphasis on barrier-free considerations throughout the seating area.
Similar to the Main Hall, we have installed handrails on the aisle-side seats located behind the central aisle. These handrails are fitted at the side of the backboard's upper part for an easy grip during climbing up and down. The large, rounded shape fits comfortably in the hand for a secure ascent and descent.
The seating area is equipped with both spacious, permanent wheelchair seats at the rear, as well as versatile convertible seats. These convertible seats are equipped with one-touch casters at the base of the leg for easy mobility as needed.
The renovation was carried out with the aim of preserving the image that has endeared the venue to the residents since its opening, while ensuring that the hall can be utilized comfortably in the future as well. It is a hall built as a hub for fostering civic culture, a place which will remain close to the hearts of the citizens.

Facility Overview

Known by the nickname 'May Theater,' Suita City Cultural Hall is a multipurpose hall that opened in 1985. It includes a Main Hall, a Middle Hall, a Small Hall, and a reception hall, among other facilities.
In addition to the seating and restroom areas, the hall's interior signage has also been renovated, transforming it into a more comfortable and user-friendly venue.
Furthermore, as part of the ceiling renovation in the hall, acoustic reflectors and other elements have also been renewed. This enhancement has further improved the already highly acclaimed acoustics, resulting in a more precise and advanced sound facility.
