Project Description

Renewal and reopening of a 'vibrant venue' for all ages, from children to adults

After undergoing large-scale renovation work for approximately 1 year and 4 months, the May Theater (Suita City Cultural Hall) reopened in September 2020. It consists of three different halls: the Main Hall, where concerts and operas are performed; the Middle Hall, dedicated to theater and classical performing arts; and the Small Hall, used for puppet shows and similar performances. The facility hosts a wide range of events tailored to the scale and characteristics of each hall.
The nickname of the hall, 'May Theater,' embodies hope for the future. Inspired by the month of 'May' associated with the city flower, the 'Satsuki (azalea),' it gets its name from the English word 'MAY' and the auxiliary verb 'May' that signifies possibilities.

Utilizing existing parts to create user-friendly seating for all

The Small Hall, with its wooden walls resembling a series of tree trunks, is a venue for puppet shows, rakugo (comic storytelling), and recitals. As it is frequently used by children, the ceiling is set at a lower height to create a space suitable for them.
The seating is arranged in an 'R' layout, surrounding the circular stage. This layout ensures clear visibility from any seat and gives an intimate feel of the stage.
While renovating, we maintained the existing bench-style seating, but redesigned the backrests and replaced the upholstery.
We changed the backrests from the traditional rounded roll style to a rectangular shape. The increased support area for the back has rendered the seating more comfortable and accessible not only to small children, but also individuals of various ages.
The cushions of the backrests and seats are made of molded urethane which has excellent shape retention and resilience. They provide superior distribution of body pressure, ensuring comfort even for longer durations.
We upgraded the upholstery from vinyl leather to fabric. The vibrant malachite green seats, combined with the wooden walls, create an ambience reminiscent of being in a forest.
Furthermore, all the halls, including the Main, Middle, and Small Halls, have parent-child rooms at the back of the seating area. These rooms are separated from the general seating, offering a comfortable and worry-free environment for enjoying performances with small children.

Facility Overview

Located in front of Hankyu Suita Station, May Theater (Suita City Cultural Hall) houses Main, Middle, and Small Halls, a reception hall, and exhibition rooms. It can be used for concerts, operas, theatrical performances, classical performing arts, various parties, and art exhibitions.
With the aim of improving earthquake-resistance, extensive renovation work has been carried out since 2019, resulting in a new, barrier-free hall. A multipurpose restroom has been newly installed in the foyer of the Small Hall, creating a comfortable and user-friendly space for everyone.
It is a hall built as a hub for fostering civic culture, a place vibrant and welcoming to the citizens, who will actually help it evolve.
