Project Description

New civic hall that is easy-to-use for the citizens

A new civic hall was opened in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture in July 2022.
The new civic hall replaced the deteriorating old civic hall and is built adjacent to the Fureai Plaza Nanohana-kan (Community Plaza Nanohana-kan). The Plaza houses a gymnasium and lecture rooms among others, and shares some of the rooms with the new civic hall to consolidate facilities.
The foyer on the first floor can also be used together with the adjoining lawn square, and is designed to make the facility more open and welcoming to the public.
The facility's Main Hall has a capacity of approximately 800 seats. The seating capacity is perfect for catering to professional performances such as concerts and plays, and also for various citizen activities.

Seating designed with comfort and ease of use in mind

The seating area is lined with chairs from the TS-19 series. The chairs were selected after carefully comparing them with many chair samples taking ample time.
The backrest of the seat is made of urethane foam with a three-dimensional curved surface that snuggles to the body. The seat's in-built corrugated springs distribute body pressure evenly. This helps maintain a comfortable posture even when you are seated for long periods of time.
We have used the ergonomically designed "Spacia" seat for maintaining good posture. The tip of the seat is thinner and the seat appears triangular when viewed from the side. The Spacia seat provides wider leg room when seated and you can pull your legs deeply under the chair. You can thus stand and sit without significantly shifting the body's center of gravity.
Two types of wheelchair-accessible seats are set up on the left and right sides of the front row seats in the auditorium. One type is where you can watch performances seated in a wheelchair, while the other offers the option to transfer to a theater chair to watch performances. The transfer chairs have a design similar to regular chairs, but the leg panels on the aisle side open outward to make it easier to sit in these chairs.
The facility is designed to provide a comfortable experience for all visitors, from small children to the elderly, and for those with and without physical impairment.

Original chair upholstery embodying Ibusuki City's spirit.

The upholstery of the chairs remarkably adds a touch of glamour to the hall.
Fabriko Co., Ltd. designed the upholstery based on Ibusuki City's request.
When viewed up close, random stripes and geometric patterns stand out on the vermilion color.

The upholstery is designed to resemble geological layers by stacking up the patterns of Narikawa-style earthenware excavated from the "Narikawa Ruins" and "Hashimuregawa Ruins" in Ibusuki City. this is a region in Southern Kyushu where typically this earthenware dating back to the Kofun period are found.
Colorful, glossy threads are woven into the vermilion base to confer a dynamic impression, depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions. This creates a rich look throughout the seating area.

The Hashimuregawa Ruins are historically important and valuable. The site furnished the first academic evidence of a chronological relationship between the Jomon and post-Yayoi periods. Incorporating the motif inspired by the region's earthenware in the chair upholstery. We hope to not only educate people about the history and culture of the region, but also encourage its preservation and transmission.
Information about the upholstery patterns and earthenware is also displayed on panels in the lobby of the building after the opening.

The civic hall is designed to showcase Ibusuki's charm to many people. As one of the city promotion initiatives to revitalize the city, it will lead to the creation of a lively atmosphere.

Facility Overview

The Ibusuki Citizen Hall, which commenced operations in July 2022, is a new facility that was relocated due to the aging of the old civic hall. The barrier-free building consists of a Main Hall with 805 seats, a foyer where visitors can relax and enjoy the exhibits, and creative activity rooms, among others. This new civic hall aims to be a center of art and culture contributing to the creation of a new culture in Ibusuki City, and to the improvement of the local economy.
