Lesser Hall,
Shikokuchuo City Civic Cltural Hall

Multipurpose Hall

Project Description

Small hall with configurable seating for different purposes

Shikochu Hall (Shikokuchuo City Civic Cultural Hall) has two halls, and the small one is nicknamed “Karuta” meaning traditional Japanese playing cards.
The seating area consists of tip-up stackable chairs as well as retractable seats that can be deployed and stowed away by pressing a single remote control button. The floor in the front section, where the stackable chairs are placed when the maximum number of seats is set up, is electrically operable to move up and down. These stackable chairs can be stored away in a storage room by carrying them on trolleys, and the retractable seats are stowed into the wall at the rear of the hall, allowing the space to be used as a flat area. The size of the flat floor is about the same as the stage in the large hall, making it suitable for holding rehearsals.
This multipurpose hall offers a wide range of uses, from live performances to rehearsals, exhibitions, and formal parties. In the event of a disaster, this flat space is also expected to serve as an evacuation center.

Two types of seats with matching designs to produce a space

There are 140 retractable seats and 72 stackable chairs, and if all these seats are used, the total seating capacity of the hall is 212 seats. Also, either the retractable seats or the stackable chairs may be used alone. As both types of seating have the same design and upholstery, they create a sense of unity when used together.
The type of seating adopted for the retractable seating was Type LW with firmly padded thick cushions. Natural wood was used on the backs of the seating bottom and backrest so that at first glance, they look like fixed theater seating with an elegant appearance. The three-dimensional shape backrest that conforms to a seated person’s upper body offers a comfortable seating experience, which is exactly how it looks like.
The stackable chair is TS-1212, developed specifically for theater and hall seating. The backrest that fits the body shape and voluminous, generous-sized cushions offer a rich seating comfort that differs from that of standard stackable chairs. Because the seat tip-up mechanism was adapted to the stackable chairs, people who sit on the seat don’t notice too much of the difference from the retractable seating, which can be regarded as one of the attractive features. These stackable chairs can be loaded on special trolleys and compactly stored away.

Facility Overview

This is a new cultural facility that has integrated the civic halls of the former Kawanoe City and the former Iyo Mishima City before they were merged. Even before construction started, great expectations had been pinned on the new building to contribute to the revitalization of the city as a hub for culture and exchange throughout Shikoku, taking advantage of its location in the center of the region. The construction plan was promoted, considering the use of the hall as an evacuation center in the event of a major earthquake or other disaster, and it was finally opened in August 2019.
