Grand Hall, Shikokuchuo City Civic Cltural Hall
Grand Hall,
Shikokuchuo City Civic Cltural Hall
Feb. 12,2020
Theater / Hall
Project Description
Grand Hall - Origami - a space with folds befitting the 'City of Paper'
Shikochu Hall (Shikokuchuo City Civic Cultural Hall) has two halls, with the 1,007-seat Grand Hall nicknamed 'ORIGAMI'. The architecture of the hall, designed to showcase the essence of Shikokuchuo City, renowned as the top producer of paper products in Japan, prominently features the motif of 'paper'. Adorning the acoustic reflectors, the walls, and the ceiling of the second floor, Japanese paper (washi) creates an atmosphere that warmly envelops the entire space.
By installing acoustic reflectors, the stage can quickly transform into a classical concert setting, and by storing away the acoustic reflectors, it can swiftly transition into a proscenium-style stage with drop curtains. This multi-purpose hall with its full-scale sound equipment can be used for a variety of performances regardless of genre.
Curved seating, contrasting with the linear folds of the interior
The auditorium seats, arranged in an arc around the stage, draw a stark contrast to the folded, linear interior that continues from the acoustic reflectors on the stage. Two types of upholstery, charcoal gray and black, which accentuate the natural-colored wood, are randomly scattered throughout the seating area. The upholstery encasing the backrest cushions is quilted for accents. It also blends in well with the black-colored steel legs, giving the entire seating area a unified look.
The cushioned backrest also has a gentle curve that is in harmony with the seating arrangement. This three-dimensional curved molding fits nicely around the backbone of the occupant. As compared to a straight backboard, it also provides more leg room for those seated in the back. The urethane foam cushions of the seat have in-built corrugated springs to distribute the occupant's weight, ensuring a comfortable seating experience even for longer durations.
The back two rows of seating on the first floor have fold-down removable seating. Their backrests can be folded down with a simple action and the sound and lighting console can be placed on top of them. Many first-floor seats, including these two rows, are equipped with mobile seating mechanism units, providing the flexibility to adjust the seat count for various events.
Facility Overview
It is a new cultural facility integrating the civic halls of the former Kawanoe City and the former Iyo Mishima City. Since its inception, this facility held great promise in revitalizing the city as a cultural and exchange hub for all of Shikoku, capitalizing on its strategic location at the heart of the region. The construction plan included the use of the building as an evacuation center during earthquakes and other disasters, and the building was successfully opened in August 2019.
