Project Description

Musashino Forest Sport Plaza is a large sports facility with a total area of more than 30,000 square meters and a seating capacity of over 10,000. The facility includes both a main arena and a sub arena. It is to be used for competition for badminton, fencing, and wheelchair basketball for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

The main arena offers a refined, modern style featuring black and gray tones on all surfaces except flooring. There are three levels of seating.

What types of seats are there in each of the three levels

The lower level seating uses a manual retractable seating system on the arena floor. These seats are normally stored away, and when they are needed they can be brought out and set up to provide stadium style seating. Each block contains 80 seats. They utilize air flotation, floating above the floor on a cushion of air for easy moving. Because they require less effort to move than seats that are moved via carts, all 18 blocks can be moved in a short amount of time.

The layout for spectator seating can be arranged into a variety of formations depending on the event. This retractable seating system uses type VISION seats with a large back and seat. When a spectator leaves their seat, the seat automatically folds up flat, providing a walkway that is wider than the walkway between fixed seats.

On the second level the seating runs the full length of the arena on both sides, and on the third level the seating completely encircles the arena. All of these seats are fixed blow molding seats.

All of the seats offer the same “width of personal space when seated” and “great view”

Each seat offers 480 to 500 millimeters of space per person, which is wider than in other sports facilities. The forward/backward pitch of 900 to 920 millimeters provides plenty of room. Because spectators will not be squeezing themselves in while concerned about those seated next to them, and because they will not need to stand each time somebody wants to walk by, they will be able to focus on watching the competition.

One key reason that all of the seats provide a great view is the large difference in height between rows. There is a height difference per row of at least 250 millimeters for the retractable seating system and at least 300 millimeters for the blow molding seats, so every seat provides an exceptional field of view.

This facility features barrier free design based on the Tokyo2020 Accessibility Guidelines. All seating areas are equipped to accommodate wheelchairs and offer other barrier free seating.
