Multipurpose Hall, Wazuka Town Health and Welfare Community Center
Multipurpose Hall,
Wazuka Town Health and Welfare Community Center
Aug. 04,2026
Multi-Purpose Hall
Project Description
A new exchange hub nurturing the future of “The Land of Tea”
Located in southern Kyoto Prefecture and celebrated as the primary production center of Uji tea, Wazuka Town is affectionately known as "The Land of Tea” for its sweeping hillside tea plantations. Opened in April 2025, the Wazuka Town Health and Welfare Community Center (cha nova) is a multipurpose complex that integrates health, medical, and welfare services with community exchange functions. The facility's nickname combines "cha" (the local tea culture), "ba" (a place where people gather), and "nova" (meaning new). At the center of the building lies a soaring atrium with floor-to-ceiling glass, offering panoramic views of the surrounding tea fields.
On the second floor, the Multipurpose Hall serves both as a venue for daily activities and as a designated evacuation site during emergencies, supporting the safety and wellbeing of the local community.
Fully automatic retractable seating for rapid space conversion
At the heart of the Multipurpose Hall's versatility is a fully automatic retractable seating system. Featuring six tiers and 84 seats, the entire seating block can be deployed or retracted in just two minutes and twenty seconds at the touch of a remote switch. Custom-engineered to accommodate the hall's ceiling height, the tiered design maximizes seating capacity while ensuring clear sightlines to the stage. This enables effortless transitions between theater-style events and flat-floor community activities.
The system features
Type S chairs
upholstered in durable 3D mesh that remains breathable and comfortable even during long events. A refined monochrome color scheme unifies the upholstery and decorative panels, creating a calm and cohesive atmosphere. When deployed, protective side curtains prevent objects or people from slipping underneath the unit, ensuring a safe environment for visitors of all ages.
Flexible layouts fostering intergenerational interaction
To supplement the retractable seating system, the hall is also equipped with
FC-303 stacking chairs
. Designed with contoured backrests for enhanced comfort, these lightweight chairs can be stored compactly on dedicated carts holding up to 30 chairs each. Combined with the retractable seating, they increase the hall's total seating capacity to 210. The layout can be easily adapted to suit a wide range of events, from town-wide assemblies to intimate workshops.
Events such as the concert for parents and children showcase the hall's flexibility: children can move and play freely on the flat floor in front of the stage while parents and local residents watch comfortably from the tiered seating behind. This versatile layout encourages natural interaction across generations, drawing visitors from both within and outside the town and helping to strengthen the local community.
Facility overview
The Wazuka Town Health and Welfare Community Center (cha nova) is an integrated public facility operated by Wazuka Town in Soraku District, Kyoto Prefecture. Serving as a one-stop hub for residents' health and daily life, the first floor houses a medical clinic, the Health and Welfare Division, a library corner, a children's play area, and a community kitchen. The second floor includes the Multipurpose Hall, traditional Japanese-style rooms, conference rooms, the Health Center, and the Social Welfare Council. In addition to serving as a daily gathering place, the center also functions as an important base for regional disaster preparedness.
