A “second home” for transit crews: The new rest facility at the Haneda Office

The Haneda Office of Keihin Kyuko Bus Co., Ltd. has been completely rebuilt as a modern facility that integrates administrative offices, a maintenance workshop, and employee rest facilities. This integration aims to improve operational efficiency by bringing previously scattered operations together in a single location. In particular, the rest facility was meticulously planned to ensure that everyone involved in daily operations—including bus crews, office staff, and mechanics—can rest comfortably.
The company operates more than 1,300 bus trips daily, from early morning until late at night. Given the varied shift patterns of its employees, overnight stays are a regular necessity. Because the rest facility essentially serves as a “second home,” it is crucial that staff can fully recover from the fatigue of their shifts. Ultimately, providing a space with a high level of hospitality directly supports safe transit operations.

Comprehensive hospitality features and dedicated nap rooms

The first floor of the rest facility features a spacious lounge with a raised, tatami-style seating area where employees can stretch their legs and unwind, while the second floor houses a large public bath for male crews. This bath was upgraded during the planning stage from a simple shower room in response to employee feedback. For female crews, privacy was paramount; their dedicated area is equipped with individual shower rooms, a spacious powder room, large lockers to accommodate heavy luggage, and a private lounge.
Reflecting this focus on worker well-being, GS-CUBE capsule beds were introduced in the nap rooms. These rooms are located in six areas across the second, third, and fourth floors, separating male crews, female crews, and office staff, and housing a total of 144 beds. This capacity was carefully calculated to accommodate the maximum number of overnight workers based on the daily timetable and staffing levels.

Tailoring capsule configurations to user needs

The GS-CUBE is distinguished by its high-quality design featuring wood-grain panels, as well as its ease of installation and maintenance. For enhanced safety, the angled ladder connects directly to the capsule entrance, allowing users to ascend, descend, and enter the upper tier securely. The top of the ladder features a small platform to assist with movement, ensuring stable access.
To best suit the demographics and layout of each nap room, the company deployed two variations of the GS-CUBE: the Front Entry type, which maximizes bed capacity within a given footprint, and the Side Entry, Tandem type, which enhances privacy. While the Front Entry style positions the entrance perpendicular to the sleeper's body, the Side Entry type places it parallel. In the Tandem configuration, the side entrances of the upper and lower tiers are positioned on opposite sides. In this facility, these Side Entry beds are further partitioned by walls to creat an environment that feels completely private. The Side Entry, Tandem type was specifically chosen for the female crews' nap room, complete with individualized lighting in front of each entrance.
All units feature a clean interior design with minimal protrusions to maximize usable space, along with two built-in storage compartments for smartphones and water bottles. On the aisle side, an easy-to-read, illuminated number plate indicates when a capsule is occupied, preventing accidental entry by others.

Facility overview

The new office building for the Keihin Kyuko Bus Haneda Office was completed in April 2026. This project was driven by a rapid increase in staff numbers to meet the soaring demand for airport shuttle buses serving Haneda Airport. Taking approximately four years from conception to completion, the project relied heavily on thorough employee interviews to gather direct feedback. While honoring the company's established customs, the facility was completely modernized to boost daily motivation. Furthermore, the maintenance workshop is fully air-conditioned to combat the intense summer heat, and the overall spatial layout minimizes blind spots to ensure maximum occupational safety.
