Project Description

A community exchange hub integrated into daily life in Tateyama Town

In January 2025, the Tateyama Town Disaster-Prevention and Children’s Complex Facility, "Akarie," opened as a new landmark for the municipality. Developed as a priority project to consolidate urban functions amid population decline and aging public infrastructure, the town hall, the former community hall, and child-rearing support functions were relocated or consolidated in the town center. Unlike traditional community centers that people visit only for specific events, Akarie serves as a welcoming everyday destination where anyone, from young children to seniors, can stop by freely. Within its open architectural design, which harmonizes with the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range, the complex provides a comfortable environment where residents can meet, connect, and enrich their daily lives.

Retractable seating system supporting gatherings, learning, and disaster preparedness

Akarie Hall is equipped with a 286-seat fully automatic retractable seating system alongside 310 lightweight and comfortable "Axis" (FC-310) stacking chairs. The retractable seating system features "Type S" chairs upholstered in highly breathable mesh fabric, ensuring lasting comfort during long events. Operation is simple: a single remote switch equipped with an LCD screen and voice guidance allows staff to deploy or retract the system with ease. The upholstery is available in three warm shades of brown—Latte, Praline, and Chocolat—evoking the natural tones of Mount Tateyama and blending seamlessly with the wood-accented interior.
When the seating system is fully retracted against the wall, the hall transforms into a spacious flat-floor venue ideal for lectures, workshops, and community gatherings. The system also features a "middle-tier setting" that deploys only the front eight rows, providing greater flexibility for mid-sized events. In times of emergency, the hall can be converted into an evacuation space, fulfilling a vital role as a local disaster-prevention facility. This versatility allows Akarie Hall to serve the community effectively in both everyday use and emergency situations.

Generating regional vitality and connecting to a sustainable future

Conceived as an integrated hub for disaster prevention, child-rearing, culture, and community exchange, Akarie was designed as a sustainable facility that residents can rely on for generations. During normal operations, it hosts disaster-preparedness lectures and training sessions to strengthen community resilience while fostering natural interaction across generations. Developed in part through emergency disaster-prevention municipal bonds, the complex represents a key investment in the town's future. Since its opening, Akarie has welcomed many local residents, with its adaptable seating system supporting a wide variety of events that revitalize the local community.

Facility overview

The Tateyama Town Disaster-Prevention and Children’s Complex Facility "Akarie" is a multipurpose complex that combines disaster-prevention functions with child-rearing support. Its nickname reflects the hope that, even if the town goes dark during a disaster, residents can find their way to the comforting light ("akari") of the facility. During emergencies, it serves as a primary evacuation center, while in everyday life, it functions as a cultural and community hub featuring training rooms and a main hall with a capacity of approximately 350 seats, including 286 retractable seats.
The children's facility provides a safe, engaging environment where children can play freely, featuring warm wooden interiors and both indoor and outdoor play areas. As an environmentally advanced facility, Akarie also incorporates geothermal radiant air conditioning, cool tubes, and solar power generation, making it the first public facility in the Hokuriku region to receive Net Zero Energy Building (ZEB) certification.
