Project Description

Repurposing vacant floor space through the introduction of capsule beds

Odawara Terminal Hotel is a business hotel in a prime location, just a one-minute walk from JR Odawara Station. The five-story building contains approximately 50 guest rooms and is used by a wide range of guests, from families on vacation to business travelers.
In September 2025, the hotel opened a men-only capsule room featuring 14 capsule beds, making effective use of a previously vacant area on the first floor. Although management initially considered increasing the number of standard guest rooms, a visit to Kotobuki Seating’s showroom introduced them to the advantages of capsule beds. This discovery led to the decision to proceed, and the project—from planning to installation—was completed in a relatively short period of about six months. Since opening, the capsule room has attracted considerable attention and has maintained near-full occupancy on weekends.

Spacious and comfortable latest-model capsule beds designed for easy access

The hotel selected GS-CUBE, the latest capsule bed model in Kotobuki Seating’s lineup. Its exterior is finished with woodgrain, multi-layered panels, creating a refined and sophisticated atmosphere that blends naturally with the hotel interior.
GS-CUBE is designed to minimize interior protrusions, resulting in a spacious sleeping area where even larger guests can relax comfortably. Ease of access was also a key consideration. The ladder to the upper tier is installed at a gentle angle, leading to a wide and stable deck. Large, easy-to-grip handrails on both sides of the entrance allow guests to step straight into the capsule without losing balance, making both ascent and descent smooth and secure.
As an optional specification, a padded backrest was added to the interior headboard, providing cushioning for guests who wish to sit upright. Mirrors and hooks are also installed, enabling simple grooming tasks to be handled within the privacy of the capsule.

The efficiency of capsule beds through optimized layout and simple installation

One of the greatest advantages of capsule beds lies in their ability to maximize individual space within a limited floor area. For this project, a front-open configuration—where the opening runs parallel to the sleeper’s body—was adopted. This arrangement made it possible to install 14 capsules while still maintaining sufficient aisle width for guests to pass one another comfortably.
The delivery and installation process also aligned well with the hotel’s renovation requirements. Each component was transported individually and assembled on-site, eliminating the need for a large loading entrance. All parts could be carried through a standard doorway. The straightforward construction method, in which panels are fitted into a frame structure, kept both the construction period and labor requirements to a minimum, ensuring a smooth and efficient renovation.
