Project Description

Kansai's largest multi-purpose arena: Diverse seating in a U-shaped configuration

In April 2025, GLION ARENA KOBE emerged as a striking new landmark for the city. This premier multipurpose venue is designed to accommodate a wide range of events, from professional sports and high-energy concerts to international exhibitions and corporate conferences.
The arena features a U-shaped seating configuration with a total capacity of approximately 10,000, surrounding the action on three sides. The first-floor arena level combines stacking chairs with a retractable seating system, while the second, third, and fifth through seventh floors are equipped with fixed seating. The fourth floor is dedicated entirely to VIP guests. Every aspect of the design prioritizes an immersive experience, ensuring clear sightlines and allowing the energy of each event to reach every spectator. All seating is finished in a sleek, uniform black, creating a cohesive atmosphere that draws full attention to the performance.

Flexible space creation via retractable seating systems and stacking chairs

The retractable seating system provides tiered seating that can be deployed or stored depending on event requirements. Three units are installed on the north, south, and west sides of the arena floor. These semi-automatic systems use a remote switch to move the main structure, while a dedicated handle is used to fold and unfold the seats. With 418 seats on both the north and south sides and 330 on the west side, the system provides a total of 1,166 seats. This flexibility allows organizers to tailor layouts to suit different event scales—deploying selected units for smaller gatherings or retracting all units to create a large, unobstructed floor for stages or standing audiences.

The seats used in this system are the VISION model, which combines a comfortable seating experience with a compact profile when stored. Equipped with back pads and seat covers, they provide a soft, high-quality feel for spectators close to the action. When unoccupied, the seats automatically tip up to maximize aisle space. Armrests, which help define personal space, are fitted with integrated cup holders as standard.
Complementing the retractable system are Score stacking chairs. These can be arranged on aluminum platforms to create additional tiered seating near the court or stage. Despite their slim profile, their high backrests provide ergonomic support, reducing fatigue during extended events. The seat covers and armrests are removable, allowing them to visually coordinate with the Spec Sheet (SC-700 series) courtside chairs. For concerts, Score chairs can be arranged across the entire arena floor to create high-capacity, orderly seating.

A seating lineup providing comfort befitting ticket categories

Seating throughout the arena is carefully differentiated to match various ticket categories and viewing experiences.
On the second and third floors, the main concourses connect seamlessly with the retractable seating below. To maintain design continuity, fixed versions of the VISION chair are installed in these areas, featuring cushions and rear-mounted cup holders. These sections adopt a staggered layout to enhance sightlines. In addition, 52 seats on the north side incorporate the Matrix System, allowing seats to be quickly removed to accommodate press or camera equipment without disrupting the overall appearance.
The fourth-floor suite level offers the highest level of hospitality in the arena. On the north and south sides, cinema-style cushioned seats provide a premium viewing experience, while the west side features the newly developed Largo chairs. With their generous cushioning and ergonomically contoured backrests, the Largo model delivers exceptional comfort tailored to VIP seating.
From the fifth floor upward, the arena uses the standard VISION model. Although these seats do not include additional cushioning, the blow-molded high-density polyethylene material offers a smooth surface and resistance to temperature changes, ensuring consistent comfort for all spectators.

Facility overview

GLION ARENA KOBE is Japan’s first waterfront arena, offering sweeping 270-degree views of the sea. Located in the New Port area of Kobe’s Chuo Ward, it serves as the home arena for the B.LEAGUE team Kobe Storks. The facility is equipped with advanced entertainment technology, including high-definition LED displays, a 360-degree center-hung vision system, and world-class acoustics.
Designed as part of a broader community development, the adjacent TOTTEI PARK plaza enables integrated indoor and outdoor events. In addition to its role as an entertainment venue, the arena also serves as part of the city’s disaster preparedness infrastructure, designated as a temporary evacuation site for stranded individuals. Whether hosting major events or supporting the local community, GLION ARENA KOBE stands as a symbol of Kobe’s resilience and forward-looking vision.
