Project Description

Capsule beds transform an existing room into a new lodging area

Shinshu Kenko Land is a comprehensive wellness complex located in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, combining day-use bathing facilities with overnight accommodation. In addition to welcoming residents and general tourists, it is also popular among outdoor enthusiasts as a convenient base for climbing Nagano’s well-known mountain areas, including Kamikochi, Azumino, and Norikura.
Following the opening of its new luxury accommodation wing, “Bettei Chikurian,” the facility sought to further enhance its lodging options by converting a vacant room on the 10th floor into a new accommodation area. For this project, capsule beds were selected as an effective solution, as they allow a large number of beds to be installed efficiently within a limited space.

GS-CUBE: Modern capsule beds offering clean, spacious interiors for men

Kotobuki Seating’s GS-CUBE capsule beds were installed in a bright room with windows offering distant views of the Northern Alps. The space has been arranged with twelve capsule beds for men, creating a compact yet comfortable lodging area.
Each capsule is enclosed on all sides with panels, effectively blocking external light, noise, and sightlines to ensure a high level of privacy. Among Kotobuki Seating’s capsule bed lineup, the GS-CUBE stands out for its clean interior design with minimal protrusions, allowing even larger guests to relax comfortably. At the head of the bed, two storage compartments sized for 500 ml bottles are provided, along with two electrical outlets for added convenience. The capsules adopt a front-open configuration, in which the entrance is perpendicular to the sleeper’s body, making efficient use of the available floor area.

Superior accessibility and seamless installation

One of the decisive factors in selecting the GS-CUBE was the design of the ladder used to access the upper tier. Installed at an angle rather than vertically, the ladder allows for safer and more comfortable ascent and descent. At the top, a wide and stable deck is combined with large, easy-to-grip handrails on both sides, enabling guests to enter the capsule straight ahead without losing their balance. This thoughtful design is particularly appreciated by guests returning after long journeys or strenuous outdoor activities.
Ease of delivery and installation was another major advantage, as construction had to be carried out while the facility remained in operation. Each component was carried into the room individually and assembled on site using a simple structure in which panels are fitted into a frame. The woodgrain exterior panels blended naturally with the existing interior design, eliminating the need for additional renovation work and enabling a short and efficient construction period.
