Project Description

Disaster Reduction Centre Suita, a disaster response base with multipurpose training rooms

Disaster Reduction Centre Suita opened in April 2024 as a key facility for disaster preparedness and response. The building also functions as the city's northern disaster operation base.

The complex houses multiple departments: fire station and command center occupy the first through fifth floors, department of transportation and public works is located on the sixth and seventh floors, and the eighth through tenth floors are dedicated to an education center and serve as an alternative site for the city's disaster response headquarters.

In the event of a disaster or emergency, the center plays a critical role in coordinating response efforts. Fire drills conducted at the facility are visible from the platform of nearby Minami-Senri Station on the Hankyu Line, helping to build trust and a sense of security among residents while also raising public awareness of disaster preparedness.

Multipurpose training room equipped with a Retractable Seating System

Training Room A, located within the Education Centre on the eighth floor, is a versatile space designed for both physical education classes for local students and children, as well as training sessions for city staff.

To support this dual function, a Retractable Seating System was installed, allowing the room to easily convert from an open space for physical activities to a tiered seating configuration for lectures and presentations. This system features functional and comfortable seating, complete with integrated writing tablets for note-taking.

At the rear of the room is a fully automated Retractable Seating System, operable by a single remote switch. Pressing the “FOR” (Forward) button smoothly deploys the tiered seats from a concealed storage compartment within the rear wall. Pressing the “REV” (Reverse) button stows them back neatly inside, making it easy to transition between layouts with minimal time and effort. A total of 170 seats can be set up or stored quickly, significantly reducing the burden on facility staff.

Comfortable seats designed for usability and silence

The seating system uses Type 5R chairs, which feature upholstered backrests and seats in a simple yet highly functional design. Each backrest is equipped with a fit-back mechanism, which adjusts to the shape and weight of the seated person, providing comfortable and supportive seating.

The seat itself automatically folds up when vacated, and includes a gentle seat tip-up mechanism that reduces noise and vibration—ideal for maintaining quiet during training sessions or lectures.

Each seat also features an L-shaped writing tablet that rotates out from the armrest when needed. Normally stored discreetly along the arm post, the tablet can be easily rotated and pulled into position to serve as a desk for taking notes. While the armrests are finished in a dark brown wood tone, the writing tablets are made from light-colored wood, creating a subtle contrast.

The seat upholstery is blue, and the aisle carpet of the Retractable Seating System was chosen in a matching bluish tone, creating a cohesive and refreshing atmosphere throughout the training room.
