Project Description

New facility established as a hub for sports tourism

Yaita City, located in the northeast of Tochigi Prefecture, is surrounded by beautiful woodlands. It is rich in leisure spots like parks and campgrounds where visitors can enjoy nature throughout the seasons, and the city offers views of the magnificent Mt. Takahara, the city's symbol.
Since 2016, Yaita City has been promoting "Sports Tourism," an initiative that links sports and sightseeing to establish a new tourism resource for the area. Advancing this initiative required a central facility within the city. The former Cultural Hall and Gymnasium, used by residents, were aging and had suffered damage, including flooding, from Typhoon Hagibis in 2019. In April 2024, a new complex facility was opened, integrating the functions of those two facilities.
The Multipurpose Hall is located on the left as you enter the west main entrance, while an arena of the same size is on the right, separated by the foyer. While the arena is mainly used for sports like basketball, volleyball, and table tennis, the Multipurpose Hall was established to host a wider variety of activities, including lectures, dance classes, and concerts. To also accommodate sports use, the hall was equipped with retractable seating and a recessed stage.

Flexible hall with retractable seating and a recessed stage

The Multipurpose Hall, which is used for various purposes, required features to ensure the flexible use of its space. To this end, a retractable seating system that can be deployed only when needed and a recessed stage were adopted.
When holding a lecture or concert in the hall, the retractable seating system is deployed. It is a manual flexibility in positioning system, so setup requires multiple people. A key feature of the three movable seating units is the freedom to set their location. Depending on the scale and capacity required for an event, a hand pallet truck can be used to flexibly lay out the seating—placing it at the rear of the hall or closer to the stage.
Because the seating units are moved for setup, the chairs installed on them needed to be lightweight, easy to handle, yet provide stable comfort. The selected chair was "LIMS," which features a thin and flexible design. The seat and backrest, designed based on ergonomics, gently support the seated body, ensuring comfort.
The total capacity of the retractable seating system featuring LIMS is 216 seats. For larger events, the seating capacity is adjusted by lining up stacking chairs in the front. The FC-303 stacking chair, which is lightweight and easy to carry, was chosen. It has a ganging feature that allows the chairs to be quickly and neatly arranged. Combined with the retractable seating system, a maximum of 786 seats can be set up.
Conversely, when the space is used for sports, the retractable seating system and the stage are retracted to utilize the large floor space.
The recessed model stage, "DS-100," is an electric type that is deployed and retracted using a remote control, allowing a single person to set it up easily and quickly. When not in use, the stage is folded and stored in the wall. The design allows the three retractable seating system units to be stored neatly in the space where the stage is folded, enabling the creation of a large flat floor space similar to the arena when everything is retracted.
The Yaita City Cultural Sports Complex, capable of supporting various cultural activities in addition to sports, is a vibrant new hub for Sports Tourism.

Facility overview

The Yaita City Cultural Sports Complex opened in April 2024 as a hub for Sports Tourism (which links sports and sightseeing) and Digital Transformation (DX), incorporating new technology. The two-story facility has a total floor area of approximately 3,309 square meters, with a 755-square-meter arena and Multipurpose Hall on the first floor. Designed with accessibility in mind, the second floor of the arena features a running course of about 100 meters for the visually impaired. A hand-pump well is provided outdoors, further supporting the facility's role as a regional Disaster Prevention Center.
