Kosai-kan: A long-awaited Multipurpose Hall completed at Keio Shiki Senior High School

In December 2023, Keio Shiki Senior High School completed of Kosai-kan, a new facility built to commemorate the school’s 75th anniversary.
The multipurpose hall on the second floor had long been anticipated, as the school previously lacked a large venue—aside from the gymnasium—where an entire grade could gather. This new hall now serves a wide range of purposes, including grade-level assemblies, orientations, lectures, and concerts.

To accommodate these varied uses, Kotobuki Seating’s Retractable Seating System was installed. When fully deployed, the system includes 133 seats arranged in tiered rows. By adding stacking chairs in front of the system, the hall’s total capacity increases to around 300. The stage is also movable and retractable, allowing the entire space to be converted into an open, flat area when needed. Thanks to its professional-grade seating and stage setup, the hall now hosts performances such as the Instrumental Club’s regular concerts and the Wagner Society Male Chorus, which were previously held off campus.

Effortless storage with wall-recessed Retractable Seating System

The Retractable Seating System consists of a tiered system that can be deployed or retracted as needed. The hall features a fully automatic recessed model, operable with a remote switch. At the push of a button, the seats fold neatly into a built-in wall cavity, and can be just as easily redeployed.

Typically, retractable seating requires the side handrails to be removed manually before storage. However, this installation features angled recesses in the wall that allow the entire seating unit, handrails included, to slide in as-is. This eliminates the need for heavy lifting, enabling any staff member to handle setup and takedown with ease.

Comfortable seating with Fit-Back technology

The system includes 133 seats arranged in seven rows, divided into left, center, and right blocks. The selected model, Type 5R, is known for its clean design and body-conforming shape. School representatives visited Kotobuki Seating’s showroom to personally test and select the seats.

Each chair is equipped with Fit-Back technology, which allows the backrest to gently flex in response to the user’s body and weight. Despite its slim profile, the seat features molded polyurethane cushions that offer long-lasting comfort, even during extended events.
The chair also includes gentle seat tip-up mechanism that gently returns the seat to its upright position when vacated, minimizing noise—an important feature for concerts and ceremonies where silence is valued.

Upholstered in shadow blue fabric, the seats offer a crisp, refreshing contrast to the natural wood interior, enhancing the hall’s bright and youthful ambiance.

Facility overview

Keio Shiki Senior High School is an all-boys school located in Shiki City, Saitama Prefecture, and is part of Keio University’s integrated education system.
In December 2023, the school completed Kosai-kan, a new multipurpose building commemorating its 75th anniversary. In addition to music rooms, a Japanese-style room, seminar rooms, and mid-sized classrooms, the facility features a multipurpose hall with a capacity of approximately 300. The hall has quickly become a central hub for student activity, fostering new opportunities for interaction, performance, and engagement.
