Gymnasium, Haruminishi Elementary School and Junior High School
Gymnasium,
Haruminishi Elementary School and Junior High School
Oct. 09,2024
School and University
Arena / Gymnasium
Project Description
A new elementary and junior high school opened on the former Olympic Village site
In April 2024, Chuo City Haruminishi Elementary School and Haruminishi Junior High School opened in "Harumi Flag," an area facing Tokyo Bay. Harumi Flag is a redeveloped neighborhood where the former Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Village was converted into residential units. To accommodate the population increase resulting from this development, a new elementary and junior high school were established in Harumi 5-chome. As of April 2024, the elementary school has approximately 800 students, and the junior high school has just over 200 students enrolled.
The school building, which is five stories above ground with one basement floor, was designed with the concept of "nurturing emotional and social skills through various experiences and interactions among students." The interior is bright and open, designed to incorporate natural light.
While the elementary and junior high school areas are separated within the building, several spaces—such as the schoolyard, pool, and library—are shared by students of both schools. The gymnasium, located on the second to fourth floors of the school building, is one such shared space.
"SIKIRUTO" introduced in the gymnasium to ensure children's safety
Since the gymnasium was expected to host simultaneous classes for elementary and junior high school students, ingenuity was required to ensure both "safety" and "ease of use." When students of different physical sizes are active in a single space, partitioning the area is crucial for ensuring safety. To address this, the large electric dividing curtain "
SIKIRUTO
" was introduced to easily divide the expansive space.
Conventional roll screens and sliding walls have drawbacks, such as the need for dedicated storage space within the wall and difficulty accommodating high gymnasium ceilings. SIKIRUTO is normally folded and stored in the ceiling space, eliminating the need for a storage compartment.
The gymnasium has a unique structure with different ceiling heights to accommodate the necessary clearances for both elementary and junior high school activities. By installing SIKIRUTO in the recessed parts of the ceiling, issues such as visual clutter or awkward appearance were resolved.
Operating SIKIRUTO is as simple as pressing a single button. All movements are electric, allowing for quick and easy retraction and deployment. Unlike a safety net, it partitions the space with a solid barrier, preventing accidents such as students colliding with one another. Furthermore, using a sheet material for the lower section blocks the line of sight, which is expected to help students concentrate.
The new school building is filled with various creative features and designs to ensure students can lead safe and healthy school lives. Today, the bright voices of the children echo throughout the halls of this learning environment that fosters their growth.
Facility overview
Chuo City Haruminishi Elementary School and Junior High School are new schools built on the former site of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Village. Haruminishi Elementary School has approximately 800 students, including about 250 students in eight first-grade classes, making it the largest elementary school in the ward.
Designed to blend with the cityscape, the school building features LED lighting throughout and an environmentally conscious design that includes solar power generation and rainwater recycling equipment. Beyond the exterior, the interior is also filled with design elements that support the healthy growth of the students. Flowerbeds and biotope areas have been installed throughout the campus, allowing children to feel the seasons and interact with nature.
The gymnasium is scheduled to open to the general public for sports use starting in July 2024, and it is expected to serve as a public facility that supports community exchange.
