NAGAMORI SHIGENOBU CIVIC CENTER

Multipurpose Hall

Project Description

Completion of a new civic center in Muko City, after seven years of development

The former Muko Civic Hall, built in 1972, was closed in 2016 due to insufficient seismic resilience. In February 2023, the Nagamori Shigenobu Civic Center opened next to the city office building.

This new facility features a hall suitable for plays and concerts, conference rooms of various sizes, a kitchen, and other amenities. It serves as a hub for promoting culture and the arts among residents and enhancing opportunities for lifelong learning.

Retractable Seating System to enhance the range of events and staging

The hall is designed for multipurpose use, with 475 total seats—418 of which on the first floor are movable. The front 18 seats are on casters, while the remaining 400 are installed on a Retractable Seating System, which creates a flat space when retracted. This flexible layout allows the hall to accommodate exhibitions, children’s events, receptions, and more. It is also designed to function as an evacuation center when needed.

The Retractable Seating System is fully automated and can be operated easily using a single remote control. Pressing the retraction button causes the 400 seats to retract, row by row, and slide into the storage wall at the rear of the hall. Pressing the deployment button reverses the process, quickly transforming the space back into a full auditorium.

The seating system includes two vertical aisles, dividing the seats into three blocks—left, center, and right—with the rear section connecting to the second-floor seating. To prevent accidental unintended movement while retracted, a lockable gate separates it from the second-floor seating area.

The front-row movable seats are connected in groups of three and can be repositioned manually by unlocking the casters. The number of seats can be adjusted according to the event.

In addition, there is space on the left side of the stage for up to three wheelchairs.

Luxurious design of Type L with bamboo-colored upholstery

All seating—including the retractable, movable, and fixed second-floor seats—features Type L. These seats are designed for both comfort and visual appeal, with solid wood backrests and generously upholstered cushions. The 3D-curved backrest supports the seated person's body, while the polyurethane-filled seat provides a stable and comfortable experience, even during long performances. Solid wood armrests add to the tactile quality and aesthetic richness of the design.

The seat upholstery is a fresh green color, reminiscent of Muko City’s iconic bamboo. The wooden elements are finished in natural tones that complement the interior, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

A multipurpose room located behind the second-floor seating offers a space where people with children or disabilities can watch the stage through a glass partition without worrying about disturbing others. This room also includes two TS-1212 stacking chairs in addition to the fixed Type L seating.

Facility overview

In February 2023, a new civic hall, long awaited by the residents of Muko City in Kyoto Prefecture, officially opened.
The Nagamori Shigenobu Civic Center was donated to the city by Mr. Shigenobu Nagamori, founder of Nihon Densan Co., Ltd. (now Nidec Corporation), and a native of Muko City. The center is named in his honor; he currently serves as director of the Global Group.
The building features three stories above ground and one below, with an exterior design inspired by bamboo—Muko City’s signature plant. The 475-seat multipurpose hall incorporates green seating to reinforce the local identity throughout the facility.
Additional amenities include conference rooms, a kitchen, a gallery, and full barrier-free accessibility, ensuring the center can also serve as an evacuation center when required.
