Multipurpose Hall

Project Description

Can be used for multiple purposes, from a seminar venue to an evacuation center

Gamagori Shinkin Bank, known by the nickname “Gamashin,” has its head office completed in 2015, in Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Located along a coast facing Mikawa Bay, their building was constructed as a hub for local financial institutions based on the concepts of safety and security; environmental friendliness; and contribution to the local community. The building was equipped with a high-level seismic isolation system to protect people’s lives and assets even in the event of a major natural disaster such as a huge Nankai Trough earthquake, a major tsunami, or a typhoon.
The high level of disaster prevention awareness is also evident in the auditorium on the first floor, which is open to the local community. The staircase-style seating area for holding seminars and lectures was equipped with retractable seating (called a Rollback Chair Stand in Japanese) that can be stowed into a wall using a single remote control. The auditorium is a multipurpose space that functions as a large flat space so that it can be used as a shelter in the event of a disaster. Usually, the auditorium is used in a variety of ways, such as to hold exhibitions and conduct yoga classes.

Retractable seating that combines comfort and design quality

The 119 retractable seats are fully automatic and can be stowed into the wall. When they are stowed away, they fit neatly in the wall at the back of the hall, preserving the beauty of the space regardless of whether they are deployed or stowed.
The seats are Type L which features voluminous seating comfort and a luxurious appearance, which has been highly regarded among all retractable seating. The three-dimensional curved backrest that conforms to the seated person’s body as well as polyurethane-filled, thick cushions support the body to ensure a comfortable seating experience for long hours. Plenty of quilting was used on the upholstered seat and backrest giving it a luxurious look and feel. Three randomly applied upholstery colors: royal blue, smalt blue, and silver grey, evoke thoughts of the sea in nature-rich Gamagori. Natural wood was used on the entire back of the seat to add elegance to the rear appearance.
A revolving armrest writing board was adopted for use in seminars. The writing board was attached to the chair arm post and can be rotated and pulled out only when necessary. Users cannot only pull the board out smoothly but also put it up with light force to store it away quietly, maintaining silence during events. Even if an emergency occurs when the writing board is in use, the anti-panic mechanism automatically retracts the board when it rises to a certain position, allowing for a quick emergency evacuation.

Facility Overview

Given its location close to Mikawa Bay, in 2015 the Gamagori Shinkin Bank’s head office was completed as a disaster-resistant facility to prepare for possible disasters, such as strong tremors and tsunami caused by a major Nankai Trough earthquake. The auditorium on the first floor is equipped with retractable seating that can be stowed away, assuming it will be used as a temporary shelter in the event of a disaster.
