Project Description

Long-awaited SDG ARENA - hosting club activities and ceremonies in a professional setup

Showa Daiichi Gakuen High School, founded in 1940, is a private high school that celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2020. The 'SDG ARENA', one of the projects commemorating the 80th anniversary of the school, was completed in February 2022. This eagerly-awaited facility serves the dual role of an auditorium as well as a gymnasium.
The existing gymnasium was not large enough for daily club activities and for indoor activities in rainy weather. So external facilities were used when hosting ceremonies attended by a large number of people. In case of events held in the gymnasium, the entire teaching staff pitched in for laying out curing sheets and pipe chairs.
Therefore, the construction of the new gymnasium demanded both, 'sufficient space as a gymnasium' and 'suitability to be used as an auditorium'.
After visiting several schools and manufacturers' showrooms, and after much deliberation, we decided to make the arena sufficiently wide to accommodate one handball court, two basketball courts, and two volleyball courts, each of which can be used for official games. To enhance the arena's use as an auditorium, we decided to install a retractable seating platform, stacking chairs, and a stage.

Chairs and stage suitable for an authentic auditorium space

When using the SDG ARENA as an auditorium, a retractable seating platform with 960 seats is deployed from the rear wall of the arena and 640 stacking chairs are arranged in front of it. A retractable stage can be unfolded from the front wall to create a 1600-seat auditorium to seat the entire school at one go.
The retractable seating platform is electrically operated, so you can set up the audience seats at the push of a button on a remote control. It takes only seven minutes for the operation to complete. Compared to the previous manual work, the time and effort required for setup has reduced drastically. The stepped pattern of the seating makes it easier to view the stage clearly even from the rear seats. The 'Type S' chairs mounted on the retractable platform fold compactly when not in use, providing ample space in the seating area aisles. This allows for smooth passage even during events where a large number of people enter and exit simultaneously.
When the retractable seating platform is expanded till its middle tier ('intermediate mode'), only the front 13 tiers out of a total of 20 tiers are deployed, creating 624 seats. This mode is suitable for medium-sized events with a limited number of attendees.
The 'FC-303D' stacking chairs designed especially for arenas are teamed with the retractable seating. As they are designed for use in large numbers, they are light weight, easy to move around and can be stored compactly. The large curve of the backrest firmly supports your body when you are seated. A donor plaque is placed on the upper back part of the chair.
The wall-mounted stage 'DS-100' is 11,000mm wide, 6,000mm deep, and 800mm high, and is at par in size with stationary stages. Like the retractable seating, it can be stored compactly when not in use, making way for a wider arena space.

Seating tailored to fit your event perfectly

We have also installed the 'X Press Stage' at the SDG ARENA, which is a modular mobile stage that can be fitted at any location. You can use it in combination with the retractable seating or line it up to extend the wall-mounted stage, to broaden your choice of how to use the venue.
The SDG ARENA is used around the clock for daily club activities among others. At the same time, it is also used to host ceremonies and events approximately 20 times a year, including graduation ceremonies, entrance oath ceremonies, entrance exam briefings, and as an entrance exam venue.
The multi-purpose SDG ARENA can host a variety of events by combining the use of the full and intermediate modes of the retractable seating, stacking chairs, a wall-mounted retractable stage, and a mobile stage.
