Project Description

Urban open lab with a multi-use hall for everything from seminars to new product launches

Shiseido Global Innovation Center (S/PARK) was established in April 2019. With the aim of collaborating with domestic and international cutting-edge research institutes and other industries and communicating directly with customers, Shiseido opened a research facility previously located in the suburbs as an urban open lab in Minatomirai, Yokohama.
The S/PARK Hall on the third floor can accommodate up to 500 people. It was planned as a place where new knowledge could be generated by making it a base for gathering and disseminating knowledge from inside and outside the company. Fixed desk seats were used in the former research facility. However, this new hall has retractable seating platforms and stacking chairs installed. The space is designed so that seats can be set up for events that require seating, and stored away when flat space is needed for exhibitions and other events. Events such as in-house seminars, lectures, and new product launches can be held here.

Retractable seating platforms and stacking chairs for various layout scenarios

The retractable seating platforms used in S/PARK Hall are fully-automatic types that can be operated with a single remote switch. A total of 168 seats were installed, consisting of two blocks of 84 retractable seats on either side. A block of 21 seats can also be set up in the long, narrow space between these retractable seating platforms in a stepped pattern. The front rows have seats mounted on retractable seating platforms, while in the back rows, TS-1212K stacking chairs can be lined up.
In addition, 138 Axis (FC-310) stacking chairs, which can be stored on a special trolley, are also provided. They can be arranged in front of the retractable seating platforms, or with the retractable seating platforms stowed away, to create a free seating layout or they can be paired with tables. These combinations can be used to create many different layouts to suit the event being held.
The retractable seating platforms can be stored into the wall, so even when all the seats are stowed away, the flat floor space has a neat and tidy look. The second floor of the hall has four rows of fixed seating, so you can view the events held on the flat floor from above.

Grand ambience with corporate red color

The hall uses four different types of seats, including Type 5R chairs mounted on retractable seating platforms, stacking chairs TS-1212K and FC-310, and fixed seats, all uniformly upholstered in red, Shiseido's corporate color. Both the backrest and the seat are upholstered, making them stand out in the interior where you can feel the warmth of the wood. This creates a gorgeous effect throughout the hall.
All the seats are comfortable to sit on, thanks to urethane foam cushions. Shiseido staff visited Kotobuki Seating's showroom to compare the seating, and selected these four types of seats suitable for the hall.

Facility overview

"Shiseido Global Innovation Center (S/PARK)" opened in the Minatomirai ward of Yokohama in April 2019. The concept behind the facility is "Place to Encounter Inspirations of Beauty". Based on over 100 years of research and development heritage, it is a cutting-edge research facility giving rise to unprecedented new beauty values and an enhanced experience facility for beauty. We aim to realize Shiseido's corporate mission of "BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD" by creating Japan's first innovation that transcends national and industry boundaries. The facility's nickname, "S/PARK," has two meanings: “Shiseido’s park” where people gather from all over the world, and a place where inspirations SPARK through a chance encounter. On the first and second floors, there is a Cafe, a Beauty Bar where you can create your own cosmetics ("My Cosme")*, a Studio for "Active Beauty", and an interactive museum, creating opportunities for researchers and customers to connect with each other.

*This is a skincare service that allows you to create lotion and milky lotion to suit each person's skin and taste. A researcher carefully analyzes the customer's skin using a measuring instrument to determine the base formula. Next, customers choose their own texture, fragrance, and label design to complete a "Beauty prescription." A service where based on the "Beauty Prescription", the on-site Beauty Bar Lab creates lotion (My Lotion) and milky lotion (My Emulsion) and delivers them to the customer at a later date.
