Project Description

Hanaoka Seishu Memorial Cardiovascular Clinic was opened

Hanaoka Seishu was a Japanese surgeon of the Edo period (1603-1868) who successfully performed the world’s first surgical operation using general anesthesia (breast cancer surgery). In August 2016, a direct descendant opened the Hanaoka Seishu Memorial Cardiovascular Clinic in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo City, Hokkaido, Japan, which was named after him. With the philosophy of honest practice; rational consideration; pursuit of truth; harmony and symbiosis, they aim to provide community healthcare services and pass on their skills to the next generation. In August 2019, an operating theater and a new building were added to the clinic. Furthermore, the Clinic was renamed as a Hospital in December of the same year.

The large conference room has rich, comfortable retractable seating

A large conference room with 98 seats was built in the basement of the new, expanded building. At the front of the room, a big screen (equivalent to 220 inches) was installed and connected to a monitor in the operating theater, so that viewers can monitor the surgery procedures in real time. The screen can be split into multiple sections or viewed as one large screen, allowing it to be used in a variety of ways depending on the occasion.
Retractable seating was chosen to make the best use of the limited space in the hospital. A wide range of options are available for retractable seating, however, a seating type chosen for this project was the one with firm cushions. These seats are the product of a commitment by the hospital staff who aimed at creating an environment in which viewers can concentrate on watching even during long hours of surgery. The appearance is comparable to fixed seating used in theaters and halls, and at first glance, they don’t look like seats that can be stowed away using a single remote control.

The backrest of the seating is made of three-dimensionally curved molded plywood and urethane foam padded and upholstered cushions, which support the body of the seated person with an enveloping comfort. The seat is “Spacia” with a narrower end part. Because the section behind the knees of the seated person was made thinner than the buttock side, when viewed from the side, the seat has a triangular shape. Compared to the conventional shape of the seat, this shape reduces the shift in the center of gravity when pulling the legs inwards while seated and standing up when leaving the seat, making standing up and sitting down easier. There is also plenty of legroom, ensuring a comfortable environment even when people have to stay seated for long hours. The wood painted in dark brown was used on the back of the seating, adding a dignified feel to the bright-colored interior space.

Each tier has a 320 mm height difference, so that there is no worry about the screen being covered by the head of the person sitting in front, and the audience can see the speaker’s face clearly. Front to back depth of the seating is 1,000 mm, which is wide enough for the audience to stay focused and not be distracted by the movement of people in front or behind. When the retractable seating is not in use, it can be stowed away in a few minutes at the back of the room using a remote control and simply pressing a button, which electrically folds down the platform with mounted seats. By covering the retracted seating with a sliding wall, a flat space is created where the presence of the seats is not even noticed. Users can expect a wide variety of uses.

The retractable seating is upholstered in vivid green and red, reminiscent of arteries and veins. This is an invaluable large conference room that plays a key role in the future of healthcare.
