Project Description

A new integrated junior and senior high school in Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture

Futaba Future School, a public integrated junior and senior high school, opened in April 2015 in Futaba District, Fukushima Prefecture.
The school was founded in accordance with the “Educational Innovation Vision of Futaba”, a plan developed in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. This vision called for a six-year integrated school to help revitalize education in the region over the long term.

Faculty members report that having junior and senior high school students share the same campus fosters mutual inspiration and motivates both groups to enrich their school lives. The school’s founding motto, “Be a changemaker,” has taken root among the students, nurturing a culture of proactive learning and initiative.

A multipurpose hall for students, faculty, and the community

In April 2019, four years after its opening, the school completed its full set of facilities, and student life began in the new campus buildings. Upon entering the main entrance, visitors are led to a central courtyard, with the classroom wing on the right and the specialized subject wing on the left.

The specialized subject wing houses elective classrooms and art rooms, as well as two key spaces designed for collaboration with the local community: the Futaba Mirai Lab and the Mirai Theater, a multipurpose hall.
The hall is equipped with a retractable seating system for 162 people that can be deployed or retracted as needed, making it suitable for both school functions and community events. When combined with 36 stacking chairs, the seating capacity expands to approximately 200.

Ideal for drama club rehearsals and performances

The theater’s Retractable Seating System includes nine tiers with a rise of 250 mm per level, ensuring excellent sightlines and unobstructed views of the stage.
Each seat features a polyurethane foam cushion wrapped in durable 3D mesh fabric, which offers outstanding breathability—providing comfort even during long sessions. The mesh fabric is also highly resistant to everyday wear, such as scratches from keys or pens, making it ideal for regular student use.
When unoccupied, the seat and backrest fold together neatly, creating wide, accessible aisles. The floor is carpeted to minimize noise from footsteps, contributing to a quiet, focused environment during performances and events.

Additional front-row seating includes simple yet cushioned stacking chairs, designed specifically for the hall. The consistent use of navy blue upholstery throughout maintains a cohesive, professional look.

The drama club makes frequent use of the hall for both rehearsals and performances. When the seating is not needed, students can operate the retractable system using a remote switch, witch retracts the entire unit compactly into the wall. After a brief instructional session from teachers, students are able to manage the system on their own—an important feature that supports everyday, student-led use.
In the former school building, the drama club had to rehearse in standard classrooms, often moving desks and chairs to create space—an inefficient setup that limited practice quality. The new theater eliminates these issues entirely, providing ample room even for the club’s 40 members to conduct basic training— a welcome improvement for both students and staff.

In daily use, the Mirai Theater regularly hosts grade-level assemblies and drama club activities. Thanks to its close proximity to the Futaba Mirai Lab, it also facilitates joint events that strengthen collaboration between students, teachers, and community members.
As a shared resource for many, the Mirai Theater is expected to continue playing a key role as a dynamic hub for learning, creativity, and local connection.
