Project Description

The Opening of an Arena That Also Serves as an Anti-disaster Facility

Nice Arena opened in Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region in October 2018. Its main arena has one of the largest areas in the Tohoku region, and it is expected to serve its purpose in the promotion of sports.

When a disaster strikes, there are plans for it to be utilized as a shelter that holds roughly 3,000 people. It has standby generators that enable it to serve as a shelter for 3 days after the occurrence of a disaster and it also has a warehouse with disaster supplies and food. External construction, which is scheduled to be completed in March 2020, is currently taking place to allow it to serve as a multi-purpose square for large-scale evacuation.

The Main Arena with Roughly 5,000 Seats Maximum

Since planning began for this arena, there was a need for its layout to be able to be changed flexibly depending on the event, while also having first floor seats that blend in with the second floor seats because the arena was expected to be used for professional sports, concerts, and other live events. In order to make this possible, Kotobuki Seating’s retractable seating (also known as telescopic seating) was chosen.

Retractable seating refers to spectator seating that can be put away and set up as necessary. Although these seats can be put away, they differ from stackable chairs because they are set up in a series of stairs. This allows the first floor seats to transition naturally into the second floor seats. Not only is the style unified, the seats are very comfortable.

By combining 800 retractable seats, 2,269 fixed seats in the second floor, and stackable chairs, a maximum of 5,000 seats can be set up in the arena.

The arena is expected to stand out, as it also has a scoreboard produced by Daktronics, the number 1 scoreboard maker in the United States, where professional sports are taken seriously.
