Construction was completed on the humanities and social sciences cooperative research facilities (East Zone 1, East Zone 2) in February of 2018, and these buildings house six research institutions, six educational institutions, and five departments that were all relocated from other campuses. These buildings are among the main facilities in the East Zone of the Ito Campus, and they offer a wide variety of lecture rooms of all sizes.
Most lecture rooms at universities in Japan are single level rooms, with desks and seats lined up in parallel rows facing the instructor. One problem with this arrangement is that the teacher’s face is often hidden from view by the head of the person seated in front of a student, and another problem is that students seated along the edges of the lecture room have to turn their bodies and twist their necks in order to look straight at the teacher.
In this lecture room, the room is configured with multiple levels so that the students and teacher can easily see each other’s faces. In addition, the desks and seats are arranged in a circle, so a student in any seat can maintain a natural posture while participating in the lecture. Because the teacher can see the faces of all of the students, they can verify that the students are paying attention and fully comprehending the material, and this makes higher quality lectures possible.
The desks and seats are fixed in place, just like the ones installed in other lecture rooms. Each seat is attached to the floor by a single leg of its own, which prevents vibrations when nearby students change their posture or take notes, making it easier to concentrate on the lecture. The back and seat are padded, providing support even when seated for a long time.
