Yokosuka Arts Theater [Main Theater],
Yokosuka Arts Theater

Theater / Hall
Project Description
'Yokosuka Arts Theater' - accommodating diverse performing arts
The Yokosuka Arts Theater is a 1,806-seat hall perfect for staging all types of performing arts, including operas, ballet, concerts, plays, and musicals. Stepping into the theater, you are welcomed by an elegant space that makes you feel as if you have entered a historic European opera hall. The seating area on the first floor is a wide pit; it is encircled by a four-tiered balcony seating. The balcony seating is arranged in a horseshoe-shape reaching out close to the stage. The gently arcing curves of the seating and delicate design make the theater even more spectacular.
A number of innovations have been applied in the theater to ensure that every performance can be staged in the best possible environment.
The mobile acoustic reflectors on the stage enable a first-class acoustic environment, suitable even for use in a concert hall. Side stages on the left and right are of the same size as the main stage, allowing you to create dynamic scenes. The orchestra pit is divided into two parts, large and small, allowing for a four-section arrangement in large ensembles. Many other innovations and devices combine to give you a high-quality-performing-arts experience.
Seats designed for ease of viewing and comfort
The seemingly simple audience seating has been meticulously designed considering the occupant's comfort.
The width of each seat is 530 mm. Although it is not uncommon these days, it was considered rather spacious when the theater opened in the 1990s. Not just the wide seat, but other factors also contribute to a comfortable seating experience. The backrest is shaped to conform to the S-curve of the human body and fits perfectly to the body of the occupant. The seat is made of urethane wrapped around corrugated springs that evenly distribute body pressure. This ensures relaxed seating even for longer durations. The seat legs are made of die-cast aluminium providing sturdy support for the seat, and are designed with a matching armrest on top. This robust structure imparting balance to the seat has been adopted as the design, making it quite appealing. The seat number plate runs across the backrest on all sides. The three-sided display on the back, top and front makes it easy to see the numbers from all angles. The seats next to the vertical aisle display row-number plates on the sides - these are mounted with the display surface tilting upwards to make them easier to read even when walking.
Even 24 years after its opening, this thoughtfully-designed theater continues to support the artistic culture in Yokosuka.
