Project Description

Fenice Sacay's Small Hall - ideal for hosting a wide range of events

Fenice Sacay has a Main Hall with 2000 seats and a Small Hall with 312 seats. Coming inside the entrance, the Small Hall is adjacent to the atrium space called Interaction and Creation Gallery. While the hall mainly hosts music-related events, it is multi-functional and can cater to a wide range of performing genres, including rakugo (comic storytelling) and bunraku (traditional Japanese puppet theater). Installing acoustic reflectors on the stage transforms the hall into a shoebox-type concert hall, and installing a horizontal curtain transforms it into a theater or lecture hall. Easily accessible to the general public, it is used for holding diverse events such as presentations and learning sessions by citizens and students.

Easy-to-use and easy-to-see seating for everyone

The rectangular box-shaped Small Hall has a tiered seating area on the first floor and balcony seating on the left and right sides of the second floor.
The first floor seating has different step heights in front of and behind the middle aisle. The seats on the left and right balconies are independent from each other, and placed as close to the railing as possible so that the stage can be seen properly when seated. All of them are arranged so that the stage can be easily seen from any seat.
In some of the seating areas, we have installed "back-collapse seats," where the back of the seats can be folded down. For events using PA tables, some seats may need to be removed for installation of equipment. However, with the introduction of back-collapse seats, the equipment can be set up simply by folding the backs without removing the seats. All you have to do is lift the backrest from behind the seat and push it forward. Even staff operating it for the first time can easily handle it.
The space near the middle aisle on the first floor is for wheelchair users. It is laid out considering easy access from outside the hall as well as easy viewing.

Original seat for Fenice Sacay with added comfort and functionality

The seats in the seating area are custom-designed by architect Takahiko Yanagisawa for Fenice Sacay, the same as the seats in the Main Hall.
The slightly rounded back trimming and the distinctive armrests fused with the legs give a soft impression to the otherwise straight-lines-themed hall. The slanting cut at the top of the wooden backboard also helps you see the number plate clearly.
The backrest is fitted with urethane foam molded into a three-dimensional shape that snuggles around your body. It gently supports your body while you are seated. The seat has Kotobuki Seating's proprietary spring that prevents fatigue even during long periods of sitting. In addition, we have used the "Spacia" seat - the seat of this chair tapers toward the tip - to provide even more freedom to move your legs.

The upholstery is an original design by FABRIKO, a textile designer working with Kotobuki Seating. The slightly yellowish brown wood is matched with a plain weave fabric in the "grayish dark green" color associated with the color concept of the facility, "green color (grayish dark green) reminiscent of Sen no Rikyu's tea ceremony". The grayish dark green color represents the serene "wabi-sabi" world of the tea ceremony.

Facility overview

Fenice Sacay was built as a reconstruction project of the aging "Sakai Civic Hall", originally built in 1965. "Fenice" means phoenix in the Italian language. The facility gets its name from Sakai's long history of reviving like a phoenix even after being burned to ashes by war, and from its medieval reputation as a free city like Venice in Italy. The design of the building embodies the idea of a free and self-governing city in the medieval times. With a calm appearance typical of Sakai, where the culture of tea ceremony flourished, we have created a space of relaxation and tranquility in harmony with the greenery of the trees. The "red color of the red seal ships" and the "green color (grayish dark green) reminiscent of Sen no Rikyu's tea ceremony", used throughout the facility perk up the space.
In addition to two halls - one large and one small, the facility has a three-story atrium of an interaction and creation gallery, multi-purpose rooms, studios, and other facilities. Along with the neighboring Onkinabashi Park, this facility is a place of recreation and relaxation for the citizens, adding color to their daily lives.
