Project Description

New Hiyoshi Memorial Hall - a new symbol of Keio University Hiyoshi Campus

A row of tall ginkgo trees visible from the east exit of Hiyoshi Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. At the end of the tree-lined avenue is Keio University's Hiyoshi Memorial Hall, with its white exterior walls and symmetrically arranged colonnades that are uniquely modern and majestic. The gateless entrance to the campus naturally integrates the university with the city, creating a vibrant and academic atmosphere on campus.

Built in 1958, the three-story above-ground, one-story below-ground Hiyoshi Memorial Hall was transformed into a four-story above-ground, two-story below-ground space after two and a half years of reconstruction work. It has an arena, studios, and training rooms on the first basement floor, and a rifle range on the second basement floor. The second floor is the foyer, and the third and fourth floors are the arena bleachers.

Chairs that harmonize with the arena

Located in the center of the memorial hall is an arena with a size of three basketball courts. The main bleachers are arranged on two levels directly opposite the 60-meter wide stage.

The chairs delivered to the arena are the BLM-1510, a long-selling product that Kotobuki Seating has been delivering to prominent sports facilities throughout Japan for over 20 years. The long wooden benches that had been installed in the previous arena were replaced with chairs that are independent of each other, giving a sense of individual seating and blocking the vibrations from the neighboring seats. The backrest, while compact, allows for comfortable seating for the long hours of sports watching. The inside is hollowed out by blow molding, in which air is blown into high-density polyethylene to inflate it, providing high cushioning and sturdiness that resists cracking even when hit by a ball. Furthermore, even if dirt adheres to the surface, it can be cleaned with a light wipe, eliminating the need for heavy maintenance.

This product is available in a total of 13 colors, but this time the original light gray was chosen to blend naturally with the "white," the key color of the memorial hall.

Facility Overview

Project to rebuild the Hiyoshi Memorial Hall built in 1958. The rebuilding has resulted in a significant change in the total floor area from approximately 6,000 square meters to approximately 12,500 square meters, and the maximum seating capacity from approximately 6,500 to approximately 10,000. In terms of functionality, air conditioning units have been installed in the arena to make the space more comfortable for spectators, and a new viewing area has been created for wheelchair users. It is expected to be used for various ceremonies, events, physical education classes, and other extracurricular activities, and was used as a training site for the British national team in the 2021 Summer Olympics.
