Project Description

Theater utilizing the world's top brands in each field

Originally built in 1988, the Wanping Theater has undergone a major transformation both externally and internally over the past five years of renovation. The stage was designed by TPC, a British theater design consulting firm that has been highly acclaimed worldwide for more than half a century. They have created a stage capable of catering to performances of diverse new styles. The lighting, sound, and stage equipment are designed by brands such as ETC, Meyer Sound, WAGNER, with the aim of presenting traditional arts with the latest technology. Kotobuki Seating brand's seats were chosen to offer the best possible seating comfort to the theater's audience.

Simple operation converts the multipurpose hall into a theater or an open space

The multipurpose hall is named "Gathering Space" Multifunctional Performance Hall. Retractable seating is used over here to meet the requirements for various activities. With a simple operation, the seating retracts into the wall, allowing the creation of different layouts to suit the intended use. The hall can host a number of events, such as those in stadiums, arenas, and gymnasiums. A large LED monitor installed on the front wall can be used for various purposes.

Retractable seating integrated with the room

There are a total of 209 chairs set up on two levels for ease of viewing, with the steps at the back resembling a mortar shape. The back two rows of chairs have a smaller width per person to ensure that the necessary number of seats are accommodated. The seating can be retracted for creating an open space, or can be used as is, with the chairs intact. It is a semi-automatic type, with the tiers operated electrically and the chairs raised and lowered manually.

To ensure safe and easy deployment and storage, the seats, which come in sets of four, can be raised and lowered with light force by means of a damper. When not in use, the CS-01 chairs fold compactly to provide a wide aisle, and when occupied, their back and seat open up to a comfortable angle for sitting.

On the design front, the fan motif, which is the theme of the theater as a whole, can be seen on one glass wall. The design of the seats is also visually modest, with full-width walls on both sides. This ensures safety without the need for handrails to prevent falls, and creates a sense of unity with the interior.

Overview View

The Wanping Theater stands out on the intersection of the Zhongshan South Road 2 and Wanping South Road, in the center of Shanghai, the heart of China's economy. The design incorporating the fan shape, a symbol of traditional Chinese performing arts and drama, is both traditional and novel. Originally completed in 1988, the Wanping Theater was closed for nearly five years for renovation and reopened in June 2021 as a new symbol of traditional performing arts in Shanghai.
