Set within the rich natural surroundings of the Tome area where it serves as a base for cultural activities, the Tome Festival Hall recently underwent a major renewal. The Hall’s cool, calm image was transformed into one expressing the bustling energy of the Tome area, which is famed for its ‘festival culture’. The main characteristic of this renewal is that it focused on being ecologically friendly. The existing seating was retained with just the backrests, cushions and armrests being replaced to create a new design of chair. The compact backrests and cushions were replaced with larger backrests, offering increased support, and deeper cushions, greatly improving comfort. Usually, the old backrests, cushions and armrests would have been separated into their constituent parts and discarded, but despite have seen fifteen years of use, they were still in good condition so the local people were asked to suggest ideas for their reuse. As a result, they have been reborn in a variety of forms, from use in the town’s driving school and high schools to private homes.
