Project Description

Seven years after its completion, St. Mary's International School's new hall is ready

The Multi-Purpose Hall at St. Mary's International School is located in the school building that was completed in 2009. In 2015, seven years after its completion, the multi-purpose hall was reborn as the multi-purpose hall after years of being used mainly for indoor sports.
The new hall, which has been transformed from an inorganic space with concrete walls to a gorgeous interior with a wood-grain base and uneven surfaces for acoustics, has been newly equipped with "Full Automatic Retractable Seating," a seating system that can be stored in the wall.

Full Automatic Retractable Seating, featuring comfortable seats

Retractable Seating was introduced to allow the hall to be used for indoor sports activities as before, but also for presentations and other purposes that require seating.  The width of the seats, a total of 16 steps, has been extended to the walls on both sides to create a sense of unity with the architecture.
The seats installed in Retractable Seating are soft and comfortable seats with generous urethane cushions on the back and seat.  The back of the seat is covered with three-dimensional wood to enhance the sense of grade. To make the wood visible from the front, the trimming shape of the back pad is a size smaller than that of the backboard. A circular donor nameplate is placed above the back pad. This accents the entire auditorium. The school's blue color shines brightly on the chic wood parts that match the interior.
The width of the seating area for one person is set at a slightly wider 500 mm. This is a consideration that only an international school with a wide age range can provide.

Mid-level design to expand the usability of the space

This Retractable Seating is equipped with an intermediate tier specification that allows you to change the number of tiers to be deployed.  In addition to a total of 16 tiers, there are modes in which only 12 or 7 tiers can be deployed. The screens hung on both sides of the wall at the back of the hall and the large sliding wall in the center of the hall that can divide the space into two sections can be used in a variety of ways according to the purpose. When in 12-tier mode, the 12th tier leads to doorways on both sides of the wall. The chairs in front of the doorway are stacking chairs, so they can be removed to create an aisle, allowing access to the seating from both the front and the back.

The hall has been bustling with a variety of events since its completion

Immediately after construction was completed, the Retractable Seating system was used two to three times a week for school assemblies, recitals, and concerts, and has been well received. When combined with the orchestra pit in front of the Retractable Seating, a full-scale musical can be held. When the Retractable Seating is stored and the floor is covered with special mats, it can be used as a safe place to practice wrestling, which is a major focus of the school.
