Arena / Gymnasium

Project Description

New gymnasium with modern exterior and chic interior

Kyorin University Mitaka Campus is located in a residential area that retains the vestiges of the lush greenery of Musashino. The campus is also home to an affiliated hospital, combining convenience with nature.
In April 2021, the construction of "S.Matsuda Memorial Arena" was completed, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the university's foundation. With its distinctive arched roof, the gymnasium has a modern appearance.
The interior of the arena has been carefully designed to provide a suitable environment for events, while the back of the stage is composed of glass, offering a view of the trees outside. It is a bright and open space with soft natural light shining through the glass.
Wooden material utilized in various parts of the building, together with the muted colors of the spectator seating area, create a chic, hall-like impression.

Flexible use of space is made possible with a combination of fixed and removable seating.

The arena is designed not only to function as a gymnasium but also as a seating space, as it is used for university events such as entrance and graduation ceremonies.
To optimize the space for activities on the first floor, all spectator seating (consisting of 1,319 seats) is placed on the second floor and distributed in both fixed and removable styles.
BLM-1510 was selected for the fixed spectator seats. Despite its compact form, the curve of the backrest supports the body and provides a stable and comfortable seating experience, making it a long-selling product from Kotobuki Seating that has been marketed throughout Japan for more than 20 years.
Two badminton courts are placed at a heightened space on either side of the entrance, with removable spectator seating immersed inside the walls. During university events, this space can be expanded to allow for seating for 669 people.
The removable spectator seats, which are normally stored inside the wall, can be activated by remote control. This is a semi-automatic type, in which the stair-like seating unit is unfolded electronically and the backrests are raised manually. A fully-automatic type, which automatically unfolds and retracts the seats, is also available, but the semi-automatic type was chosen in consideration of its load capacity and frequency of use.
The upper floor of the building is one of the few places in Japan where both seating and court space can be used at the same time.
The seats used are VISION, which can be folded up compactly for easy storage and comfort. This type of seat allows for a wide aisle width and easy passage.
The seat is designed to be wide enough to provide a comfortable seating position. The chairs allow for a clear view of the stage and floor in front, creating an optimal environment for spectators.

The S.Matsuda Memorial Arena, a new symbol of Kyorin University's Mitaka Campus, is used for club and circle activities as well as for ceremonies such as entrance and degree conferment ceremonies, utilizing its environment and convenience which are ideal for spectators.
As an arena that can be used flexibly, it is expected to be utilized in a wide variety of activities in the future.
