Project Description

Waseda Arena, which was completed in December 2018, is a multi-purpose facility that includes a sports museum and learning commons. The main arena spans the ground floor to the second floor underground, and a hilly area spreads across the rooftop space above it. This rooftop space, which has a gentle slope from the shape of the campus, blends into the green scenery and hides the presence of the main arena underground.

The second floor of the main arena, which surrounds the floor in a C-shape, is lined with retractable seating and fixed seating. When expanding the retractable seating, a total of 1,840 seats can be set up. We decided to implement retractable seating based on the desire of the university to be able to utilize the space for running or dance practice when the spectator seats are not necessary.

The retractable seating, which is stored in the wall, can be pulled out using a lever. Since the seats in the form of a bench, they are lighter than seats with backrests and can be easily maneuvered by females also. A total of 26 blocks of retractable seating are stored in all walls of the second floor. Each block of retractable seating has 32-48 seats. 8 to 12 people can sit on each row, and we put joints on the seats to clearly show where each person’s seat ends.
