Project Description

Since its establishment, the Takatsuki Junior and Senior High School has worked to create an ideal learning environment through projects including facilities improvement, and constructing new buildings. In 2016, construction began on a renovation of the school facilities, which is planned to have all new buildings completed in 2020. The concept for the renovation is “Raising Global Leaders † A Space to Foster Ambition - “. Following from the school’s mission of a ”Global Mindset”, this is meant to be a new learning environment for instilling students with the skills they’ll need in society going forward, and to be a place which will foster the ambition to propel them.

The Multipurpose Arena was completed during the first phase construction of the school renovation, and it was completed in 2017. In addition to being used for gym class or ping pong club, the space is also used for a variety of things including the parents’ meetings, students’ presentations, research presentations, and theatre performances.

This wide variety of uses for the space is made possible with Retractable Seating. Retractable seating (also known as telescopic seating) is tiered audience seating which can be stored compactly when not in use, and easily brought out when needed. These systems are used at many schools because they allow a single area to be easily transformed from wide floor space into audience seating. The chosen solution for this project, was two 90-seat blocks lined up next to each other, to create a 180 seat Manual Retractable Seating solution.

The seats are blow-molded, a technique often used for audience seating for sports, and they ae bench-style. The back of the seat, which supports a larger amount of weight, has been molded with a dip in the back to reduce fatigue from long periods of sitting.
