Theater / Hall

Project Description

The 'Nagano City Arts Center' opened in May 2016. The center is designed by world-renowned architect Fumihiko Maki. The locals expect that the center will serve as a conduit for the spread of Nagano City's culture and art throughout Japan and the rest of the world.

The main hall's interior design theme is 'mountain range,' drawing inspiration from Nagano Prefecture's natural mountainous terrain. An impressive mountain design is created using local prefecture-grown chestnut wood for the interior walls and floors. In addition to classical concerts and other musical performances, the hall can also be used as a theatre due to the proscenium-style stage design, which is divided like a picture frame.

The bentwood armrests are featured on the 1,292 chairs designed by Fumihiko Maki and delivered by Kotobuki Seating. It also emphasizes the presence of each seat with its unique backrest shape that slopes upward from the lower back portion. As a result of this subtle design, the space feels more cohesive while also giving the impression of an individual seat. The three slits on the back of the backrest and the seat accentuate the spacious hall space.

The chairs' upholstery contributes to the three-dimensionality of the space. Textile with an expressive blue hue is woven using two warp and weft yarns that have slightly different saturation levels. In doing so, the upholstery becomes uneven, emphasizing the colors' richness and saturation even further. In addition, three shades of blue were created in three different tones, and each upholstery fabric was randomly upholstered. The addition of a dark brown dot pattern adds depth that would be impossible to convey using only similar colors. This unique fabric was also used to make tote bags. Nagano City Arts Center is the only place to find this unique item.
