Project Description

A dojo hall in Yokohama combining martial arts traditions and Japanese flair

Yokohama Budokan is the first full-scale martial arts hall in the city of Yokohama.
Upon entering the entrance hall, visitors will find a warm and prestigious interior decorated with natural materials such as wood and stone. The delicate design, including the wood louvered ceiling, welcomes visitors to a space where they can feel the traditional martial arts and Japanese flair of the building's concept. Entering further, visitors will find a full-scale martial arts hall with seating for approximately 500 spectators, which can be used for various martial arts such as Naginata, Karate, Aikido, Shorinji Kempo, and Taijiquan, in addition to Judo and Kendo.
A movable partition wall has been installed in the center of the martial arts hall, making it a flexible space that can be divided into two spaces for separate competitions on the left and right.

The wooden spectator seating blends in with the interior

For the 503-seat spectator seating, the wood type NP-8000 series that harmonizes with the interior, was adopted. Across from the upper seat, a row of beautifully wood bark chairs line the long side of the room.
The chair is made of a single piece of molded plywood bent into a simple design. The backrest is slightly three-dimensionally curved to conform to the body when seated. The bending function, which flexes backward comfortably when spectators lean back against it, further enhances seating comfort. The end of the seat is curved downward to make it easier to tuck the legs in when seated and to soften the contact with the back of the knees.
The row rise between the each row of seats is 450 mm. It is designed with a large row rise so that the view is not obstructed by the heads of spectators in front. This has created a comfortable viewing environment that gives spectators a clear view no matter where they are seated.
Wheelchair space is also provided in one of the front rows, allowing wheelchair users to enjoy the action alongside other spectators.

Facility Overview

Yokohama Budokan was constructed as part of the Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium Redevelopment Project by the City of Yokohama. The Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium Redevelopment Project is a project to create a new center for sports promotion in Yokohama by utilizing the site of the former Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium and the site of the former Yokohama Sogo High School to build a main arena facility and sub-arena facility (Yokohama Budokan) to accommodate large-scale tournaments, concerts, and other entertainment events in addition to citizen use. This project will create a new base for the promotion of sports in Yokohama.
Built on the site of the former Yokohama Sogo High School, Yokohama Budokan features a full-scale martial arts hall on the first floor for various martial arts competitions and an arena on the second through fourth floors. The arena can be used by citizens or to host professional sports matches, including the B-League. The venue is expected to create a lively atmosphere in Kannai and Kangai areas.
