Project Description

The iconic chapel of Aoyama Gakuin Junior High School

The chapel at Aoyama Gakuin Junior High School is located in a school building that was completely renovated in 2019.
The chapel echoes with sermons that cultivate respect for others and hymns that envelop the body and soul in a melody comforting the spirit.
The first thing you see when you step into the chapel is the colorful stained glass, the pipe organ, and the crucifix, which is the symbol of the chapel. Windows on the left and right walls that support the arched ceiling let in natural light creating a sacred and soft ambience in the chapel.

An ingenious seat for prayer

The 856-seat chapel, which can accommodate all junior high school students, is lined with simple and compact seats with wood as the motif. Unlike theater seats, where you can lean back to enjoy the show, this seat is designed to make your back stretch naturally, which is appropriate for a place of worship.
The back of the seat is kept lower in height than a normal seat to match the chapel environment. The back has a rack made of the same wood as the back panel. One can keep the Bible or a hymnbook in there. The polyurethane foam pad makes the seat comfortable to sit on so that you can be absorbed in worship. The seat automatically tips up when one leaves the seat, making it easy to stand up during worship. Armrests on both sides of the seat demarcate one's private worship space.
Starting with the natural beech wood used on the back, the wooden parts finished in a gentle medium shade, the upholstery woven in a mixture of browns, and the black metal fittings - all these make the seats blend in with the austere atmosphere of the chapel as if they were part of the architecture.

Facility Overview

Aoyama Gakuin Junior High School was established in 1947 as a coeducational junior high school by the Aoyama Gakuin School Corporation as a part of the educational reform after World War II. The chapel is a very important place in the education of Aoyama Gakuin Junior High School, because one of their educational goals is to 'nurture a heart that fears God and cares for others through doing worship and studying the Bible'. The complete renovation of the school building was started to celebrate the 70th anniversary in 2016. In addition to the chapel, the new school building has adopted a 'Subject Center System' with dedicated classrooms for each subject, creating an environment in which students can learn actively and interact.
