Yokkaichi - City General Gymnasium

A place to 'sport'.  New gymnasium opens in May 2020.

Yokkaichi City is in northern Mie Prefecture, facing the mountains and the sea. It is a warm place with ancient tombs. Yokkaichi city considers it important to maintain good health both mentally and physically, and to nurture a rich mind and sensitivity through sports, and has identified the development of sports facilities as one of the city's major challenges. The old gymnasium was replaced for the National Athletic Meet.

The arena has one of the largest auditoriums in the Tokai region of Japan.

The main facility - the arena - can accommodate four volleyball courts, three basketball courts, two handball courts, and twenty badminton courts.
3,000 seats have been installed in the upper level to watch the games, one of the attractions of sports. These seats are NP-8000 - a molded plywood seat with an integrated back and seat. Molded plywood is made from high-quality materials that are laminated and pressed into molds using advanced technology. This gives us a beautiful thin yet strong sheet with a flexible curved surface results. Seats are something that come in direct contact with the users. Users can feel the gentle touch and warmth of the wood. The soft touch and warmth of the wood create a high-quality space that blends in with the wooden interior of the arena. The seats have a spacious depth of 1050mm and step height of 500mm allowing the audience to see the center court and concentrate on watching the game.
In addition, the legs of the chairs are attached to the top of the steps. This helps to create a clean and comfortable seating area with a clear footing that is easy to clean.

Retractable Seating - Enjoy the up-close viewing

A manual retractable seating (RSP) system has been installed on the floor so fans can watch the games up-close.
Seating consisting of 512 seats in 16 blocks is completely mobile and can be moved around to suit the intended purposes. The entrance and exit in the center of the arena at the Yokkaichi City Gymnasium may be used for carrying items and athletes, so the chairs should be arranged so that the space in front of the entrance and exit remains open. For events that do not require the seating, the retractable seating can be stored compactly in a storage compartment. The arena's retractable seating allows it to be used for a variety of events.
The retractable seating is designed to fit the size of the arena and the number of seats needed to meet the needs of each facility. This retractable seating is not only convenient, but also strong and earthquake resistant, so it can be used for a long time with peace of mind.

The Yokkaichi City gymnasium was built to promote people's health, and it will be used for more events, such as large and small sporting events, daily practice, as the city grows.

Facility Overview

The new gymnasium, equipped with one of the largest arenas in the Tokai area, an archery range, and a multi-purpose room that can be divided into separate sections, is located in the city's Central Green Space, one of the city's representative green spaces, which is a popular place for citizens to jog, relax on the lawn, or take a walk. Mr. Keiichi Matsuo of Kume Sekkei Architectural Design Department, Inc. was in charge of the design. The interior of the facility, which is both environmentally friendly and functional, is decorated with wood. The design of the arena, in which wood is bent and combined in a grid pattern to express the overlapping and spreading of ripples, was created based on the concept of "letting people feel the excitement of sports and the expansion of dynamism". The arena is a place where people can not only play sports, but also watch top-level sports, and is expected to be further utilized for the promotion of sports and the health of citizens.
