Theater / Hall

Project Description

In January 2011, the Kanagawa Arts Theatre (also known as KAAT) was built in Yokohama, a city with a history dating back to the founding of its harbor. In Kanagawa Prefecture, it serves as a cultural and arts center and offers audiences the chance to enjoy world-class art performances.

KAAT hall has drawn interest for its novel concepts and features, which have never been seen in a theatre before. Moveable seating with a 'floor elevation system' was introduced in the hall, which was designed with the idea of 'variability' of space and 'oneness' with the audience in mind. You can move rows of seats up and down by adjusting the slope of the first-floor seats (adaptable floor system). This system allows for the creation of flexible audience seating that can be used for a variety of stage productions and performances. It is possible to put in up to 1300 seats. The stage-to-audience distance is 25 meters, which is shorter than in other similar-sized halls, allowing the audience to feel more connected to the stage.

Additionally, all of the seats on the first floor are designed to be easily removed and repositioned to serve different seating needs with floor elevation. The seat's design is also insightful, with a straight shape for the armrests and lower back, a thin shape for the back cushions, and with no impact on the up-and-down movement of each variable tier. This seat was designed to provide maximum seating comfort in the most extreme conditions. The lustrous red upholstery is visible even from the back, creating a stunning impression upon entering the hall from the rear.
