Multipurpose Hall

Project Description

NAHArt, a cultural hub for sharing inspirations and emotions

Opened in October 2021 in Kumoji, Naha City, NAHArt - Naha Cultural Arts Theater is now the largest urban public theater in the prefecture. It was created to serve as a hub for the promotion of culture and the arts and as a center of urban development, with the aim of energizing people and the city, and turning Naha into a more charming city.

The name "NAHArt" expresses the wish that the citizens will feel affinity for the center as a hub of performing arts that will appeal to the Naha (NAHA) residents' hearts (HEART).

Flexible seating reminiscent of the Shuri Castle

The Small Theater is a multi-purpose hall. The stage and seating can be changed in various ways allowing for a flexible use of the space.
The hall's theme, including the vermilion color stage walls, allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of the Shuri castle.

The hall is installed with retractable seating as well as stackable chairs with the total seating capacity of 300.
The after-service, which also ensures peace of mind, was one of the deciding factors for installing these seating systems.
Fully-automatic retractable staircase-like seating can be easily deployed and retracted.
Seating can be effortlessly set up in a matter of minutes with the flip of a switch on a remote control.

The TS-1212 series of stackable chairs developed for theaters and halls was used to match the design of the retractable seating. The backrest snuggles up to the body and the voluminous cushions provide ample seating comfort.
The space where stackable chairs can be installed has a looming floor, allowing the seating layout to be changed to suit the performance. When a larger space is needed, the retractable seating and stackable chairs can be stowed away and the room can be used as a flat floor room accommodating approximately 400 people.

Bright, originally designed upholstery

The seat upholstery is custom-made by FABRIKO, a textile design company of Kotobuki Seating.
The design was created in consultation with the design team, inspired by the traditional Okinawan "Shuri brocade", in keeping with the theater's theme of "Shuri Castle".
The main motif, however, is the Shuri Hanakura-ori, which was considered exclusive to royalty. The pattern is a checkered arrangement of flower weave and openwork, quite characteristic of Hanakura-ori. Hanakura-ori is said to have been worn by princesses and above. The yellow dye comes from the city's local "Fukugi" tree.
The bright yellow upholstery looks great against the subdued red and black interior, beautifying the seating area.

NAHArt - Naha Cultural Arts Theater is a hub for culture and the arts, and a place that connects people's hearts and minds. As a place people can visit casually to relax and interact, the center will undoubtedly bring liveliness to the region.

Facility Overview

NAHArt - Naha Cultural Arts Theater is the only facility in the prefecture that serves as a hub for disseminating culture and the arts. The distinctive exterior of the building features exterior panels made of Shuri brocade (Hanakura-ori), a traditional Okinawan textile, softly wrapping the entire building. The facility has a common lobby like a garden (una) where people can interact, and an alley-like internal passageway (su-jigwa) between the Grand Theater and Small Theater. It is a space anyone can casually visit.
