April of 2019 marked the opening of Adastria Mito Arena, the largest sports arena in the prefecture. The arena is equipped to host a variety of sports, and includes a main arena, sub arena, wrestling area, fencing area, boxing area, training rooms, and multi-purpose rooms, among others.

Two types of retractable seating make up the main audience seating

The Main Arena can hold up to 5,000 people. The 2nd floor is comprised of fixed seating, while the 1st floor uses retractable seating (also known as telescopic seating).

The retractable seating on the 1st floor is such that it can be stored away in the walls and storage spaces, and opened for use as audience seating when necessary. The Adastria Mito Arena uses 1,548 retractable seats. Of these, 1,260 are automatically controlled, and the remaining 288 are hand-operated.

Automatically controlled retractable seating makes up two blocks, one on each of the long sides of the arena. Each block contains 315 seats. With one remote control, seats can be opened or stored in preset configurations in three and a half minutes. With different configurations of automatically controlled audience seating, seats can be arranged just on the sides, surrounding a center court, or in any number of combinations to allow for different kinds of audience seating.

For both automatic and hand-operated seating, seats with wooden backs were selected. The wood design brings a gentle warmth to the arena, which is the sort of space which can often seem impersonal.

For the fixed seating on the 2nd floor, blow-molded plastic seating with seats which flip shut were used. They have a large backs and seats, but the shape is slim and elegant. When unoccupied (when the seat is flipped up) the seat has a depth of just 250 mm, creating wide aisles which allow for easy walking through and passing by.

A very large-scale automatic divider, comprised of two materials

The main arena has space to accommodate three basketball or volleyball courts, and it was suggested that when multiple games or practices take place at once, it would be best if there were something separating them so that each area would be undisturbed by the others, a thought which led to the installation of dividers in the space. Two dividers were installed, allowing the length of the arena to be divided into three separate areas.

The dividers are comprised of single curtains, 15 meters in height. The curtains are made of transparent mesh to allow users to see to the other side, and just the bottom 3 meters are made of an opaque solid material. When the space remains unoppressive even when divided, and visually the dividers allow for better concentration on the game at hand. Users have appreciated that even if each space is used for a different purpose, there is no interference between them.
