In 1979, the world's first capsule hotel was opened in Osaka.
Inspired by the capsule architecture presented by Kisho Kurokawa at the Osaka Expo, Kotobuki Seating launched the Sleep Capsule bed. In the intervening 36 years, capsule beds have developed and now offer sophisticated, flexible sleep solutions. Their minimal space requirement augments their appeal to an increasingly wide range of industries. Capsule hotels have moved away from their image as lodgings for businessmen and are being transformed into attractive, comfortable spaces, popular with a diverse range of travellers. This stylish, comfortable trend in Japanese travel culture has become highly regarded overseas as well, and the wider benefits of the sleep capsule are starting to be appreciated outside the travel industry. The comfort provided by the compact space meets the need for improved nap facilities in workplaces and increasing numbers of businesses and services are taking advantage of the safety and productivity improvements thanks to to well-rested employees.
